Biography
Early life
Alessandro Safina was born on 14 October 1963 in Siena, Italy. He started studying music at nine, entered a music academy at twelve, and at seventeen was accepted at the Conservatorio di Musica "Luigi Cherubini" in Florence. In 1989 he won the Concorso Lirico Internazionale in Mantua, a success that led to his debut in opera. In 1990 he sang the role of Rodolfo in Puccini's La bohème alongside the soprano Katia Ricciarelli.
Career
Safina has tried to join his interest in opera with modern popular music, and he is described as an operatic pop tenor. During the 1990s he began recording with the Italian pianist and composer Romano Musumarra. His single "Luna" reached number 2 in the Dutch charts, and his self-titled album was issued in September 2001. Earlier recordings include the album Insieme a Te and the single "La siete di vivere".
In 2001 he contributed to the score of Baz Luhrmann's film Moulin Rouge!, performing Elton John's "Your Song" with Ewan McGregor, and a part of the "Elephant Love Medley" sung by McGregor and Nicole Kidman. That year "Luna" was also included in the soundtrack of the Rede Globo soap opera O Clone, in which he made a guest appearance. In November 2001 he sang Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Music of the Night" for Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Variety Show. Insieme a Te had sold 700,000 copies worldwide by 2002.
In March 2002 he performed "Del Perduto Amore" at the San Remo Music Festival, and he recorded "Your Song" with Elton John for Sport Relief, a charity campaign for children. A concert titled "Only You", with Patricia Manterola, was filmed in 2001 in the El Greco amphitheatre in Taormina, Sicily. The American public channel PBS later broadcast it in its Great Performances series, and it came out on DVD in 2003.
In 2003 he sang the English and Korean vocals on "Hamangyeon", a song on the soundtrack of the Korean series Dae Jang Geum. He also appeared as Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca e Altre Due, a film based on Puccini's opera Tosca. His later albums include Musica di Te (2003), Sognami (2007) and Dedicated (2014).
In 2007 he recorded a duet with the British soprano Sarah Brightman for her album Symphony. He joined her for the Symphony World Tour in 2008, where they performed "Canto della Terra" and "Sarai Qui". In June 2017 he sang "'O sole mio" with the tenor Andrea Bocelli at the Peoples' Friendship Palace in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
His other duets include "Brindisi" from Verdi's La traviata with the soprano Sumi Jo, "Life Goes On" with the Dutch singer Petra Berger, "Aria e Memoria" with Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" with Rod Stewart, and "Bile, Bile" with the Turkish singer Sezen Aksu. His recordings have appeared on Universal Music Group, and his YouTube channel had about 100,000 subscribers as of February 2025. He is listed both as an opera singer and as an actor.
