Biography
Early life
Alex de Minaur (Alex de Miñaur Román) was born on 17 February 1999 in Sydney, Australia. His father is Uruguayan and his mother is Spanish. The family lived in the south of Sydney for his first five years and then moved to Alicante in Spain, where he did most of his early schooling. They went back to Australia in 2012, although by 2015 he was once more living in Spain. He holds both Australian and Spanish citizenship and speaks English and Spanish, along with some French.
He first picked up a racquet at the age of three at a Sydney academy. From the age of nine, while in Alicante, he trained with the coach Adolfo Gutierrez. As a junior he rose to second in the world rankings and won the 2016 Australian Open boys' doubles title with Blake Ellis. Lleyton Hewitt has never held the formal role of his coach but has acted as a mentor.
Career
De Minaur made his professional debut in July 2015 at an ITF event in Spain. Wildcards took him into the main draws of the 2017 Australian Open, French Open and US Open, and at Sydney in January 2017 he recorded his first tour-level victory, over Benoit Paire. He ended that season ranked 208th.
In 2018 he reached the Brisbane and Sydney semifinals in consecutive weeks, then lost the Sydney final to Daniil Medvedev. He later reached the Washington final, lost to Alexander Zverev, entered the top 50 in August, and finished second at the Next Generation ATP Finals. That autumn he overtook Nick Kyrgios as Australia's highest-ranked man.
His first title came at Sydney in 2019, followed by Atlanta and Zhuhai in the same year, and he reached a ranking of 18th after losing the Basel final to Roger Federer. In 2020 he played his first major quarterfinal at the US Open and won the Cincinnati doubles title with Pablo Carreno Busta. Further singles titles followed in Antalya and Eastbourne in 2021, Atlanta in 2022 and Acapulco in 2023, his first at ATP 500 level. In 2023 he also played the Canadian Open final, his first at Masters 1000 level, losing to Jannik Sinner.
The 2024 season was a turning point. At the United Cup he beat Novak Djokovic, his first win over a world number one, and he became the first Australian man in the top ten since Hewitt in 2006. He defended his Acapulco title, won the Rosmalen grass-court event, and reached quarterfinals at the French Open and the US Open. He also made his debut at the ATP Finals in Turin. In 2025 he reached the Australian Open quarterfinals for the first time and won the Washington title, a third ATP 500 victory, which brought him back into the top ten. He reached a second consecutive Australian Open quarterfinal in 2026 and a career-high ranking of fifth.
Playing style
He is known for speed and court coverage, which earned him the nickname "Speed Demon", and he tends to build points from the baseline as a counterpuncher while mixing in sudden pace. His forehand is regarded as the stronger wing, and his serve has been the part of his game most often cited for improvement.
Representing Australia
De Minaur has played for Australia at the Davis Cup since his debut in February 2018 against Zverev. He has also appeared in all editions of the ATP Cup and in the United Cup. He was chosen for the Tokyo Olympics but withdrew after a positive COVID-19 test.
Personal life
De Minaur has been in a relationship with the British tennis player Katie Boulter since March 2020. They announced their engagement on 23 December 2024 and married on 12 July 2026.
