Biography
Early life
Allen Iverson, an American basketball player, was born on 7 June 1975 in Hampton, Virginia. As a child he went by the nickname "Bubba Chuck". At Bethel High School he played football as well as basketball, and during his junior year both of his teams won Virginia state titles. The Associated Press named him its High School Player of the Year in each of the two sports. Outside school, he played for an AAU team run by coach "Boo" Williams, which took the 1992 national championship in the 17-and-under division.
In 1994 he enrolled at Georgetown University and joined the Hoyas under head coach John Thompson. In his first season he was named Big East Rookie of the Year and helped the team reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. The following year Georgetown won the Big East championship and advanced to the Elite Eight. He earned first-team All-American recognition and was voted the conference's Defensive Player of the Year in both of his seasons. After his sophomore year he entered the 1996 NBA draft, becoming the first player to leave Georgetown early under Thompson.
Career
The Philadelphia 76ers chose Iverson with the first overall pick in 1996. At 183 centimetres (6 feet) tall, he was the shortest player ever taken first overall. He averaged 23.5 points, 7.5 assists and 2.1 steals as a rookie and won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award for 1996-97. Over the next seasons he developed into the league's leading scorer, taking his first scoring title in the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season. That year he also made the All-NBA First Team and led Philadelphia to its first playoff appearance of his career.
The 2000-01 season was his strongest. He averaged 31.1 points, led the league in steals, won the All-Star Game MVP award and was named the league's Most Valuable Player, the shortest and lightest player to receive that honour. Philadelphia finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference and reached the 2001 NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. In the opening game Iverson scored 48 points in a 107-101 win, still the most by a player in a Finals debut, although the Lakers took the series. He won scoring titles again in 2002 and 2005, giving him four in total, and in February 2005 he scored a career-high 60 points against the Orlando Magic. In 2005-06 he averaged a career-best 33.0 points per game.
In December 2006 the 76ers traded him to the Denver Nuggets. He moved to the Detroit Pistons in November 2008, then signed with the Memphis Grizzlies in September 2009, a stay that ended by mutual agreement after three games. He rejoined Philadelphia in December 2009 and was voted an All-Star starter for the eleventh consecutive year. His last NBA game was played in February 2010. In late 2010 he signed with the Turkish club Beşiktaş, debuting in the EuroCup in November, and played ten games there before returning to the United States for calf surgery in January 2011.
Internationally, Iverson was part of the United States team that won gold at the 1995 World University Games in Japan. He played in the 2003 FIBA Americas Olympic qualifying tournament, which the United States won, and a year later took a bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics. On screen he appeared as himself in the 2002 film Like Mike.
He announced his retirement on 30 October 2013. In 2017 he joined the new 3-on-3 league BIG3 as a player and coach of 3's Company.
Recognition
Iverson was an 11-time NBA All-Star. Besides the 2001 MVP award and the 1997 Rookie of the Year honour, he won the All-Star Game MVP award in 2001 and 2005 and was chosen for the All-NBA First Team in 1999, 2001 and 2005, with Second Team selections in 2000, 2002 and 2003 and a Third Team place in 2006. He also received the BET Award for Athlete of the Century in 2001, and was nominated for the Best NBA Player ESPY Award in several years.
The 76ers retired his number 3 in a halftime ceremony on 1 March 2014, and in 2024 the club unveiled a statue of him outside its practice facility. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in the class of 2016 and, in October 2021, was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. The city of Newport News named a street "Allen Iverson Way" in recognition of his investments in his home area, and Virginia's governor declared 5 March Allen Iverson Day.
Public roles
In October 2023 Reebok appointed Iverson its Vice President of Basketball, working alongside Shaquille O'Neal, who was named president of basketball. In this position he takes part in player recruitment, community initiatives and athlete activations for the brand, continuing a long partnership that began with a contract he signed with the company after the 2001 season.
