Early life

Amaia Romero Arbizu, who performs under the single name Amaia, was born on 3 January 1999 in Pamplona, Navarre. She comes from a family of musicians. Her uncle Joaquín Romero, who managed the Orfeón Pamplonés choir from 2008 to 2016, noticed when she was a child that she had absolute pitch, and her aunt Carmen Arbizu teaches singing at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Navarra. Amaia began a piano degree at that conservatory and completed her musical studies at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona in 2019.

Career

Amaia appeared on Spanish television as a child, playing the piano on a TVE news programme in 2009 at the age of ten in a children's talent contest, where she placed third in her instrument category. She went on to take part in the talent shows Cántame una canción and El Número Uno, in which she was eliminated in week six in 2012, and she attended a rock camp in 2011 and 2012. In 2016 she collaborated with the Navarrese band Lemon y Tal on the song "Cicatrices de mi realidad".

In 2017 she auditioned in Bilbao for the revived talent competition Operación Triunfo. She was admitted to the programme's academy in October 2017. In January 2018 she reached the final after receiving 40 points from the jury, the highest score in the history of the competition, and she won the series with 46 per cent of the public vote. She then signed a pre-contract with Universal Music and joined the other contestants for the tour OT 2017 en concierto, which comprised 23 concerts in 2018.

She was also a candidate to represent Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018. In a selection show on 29 January 2018 she performed three songs, and "Tu canción", a duet with her fellow contestant Alfred García, won 43 per cent of the public vote. They placed twenty-third in the final in Lisbon with 61 points.

From mid-2018 she began working as a solo artist, moving to Barcelona and touring Spain with The Free Fall Band. In September 2018 she sang with U2 at their Madrid concert. Her promotional single "Un Nuevo Lugar", produced by Raül Refree, came out in December 2018. Her debut album, Pero No Pasa Nada, was released on 20 September 2019 and reached the top of the Spanish albums chart in its first week; its lead single was "El Relámpago". She toured with it from October 2019 until September 2021, a run that was partly cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Alongside the album she contributed songs to the Netflix series Paquita Salas and the series Veneno, and she performed a tribute to Marisol at the 34th Goya Awards in January 2020. A documentary about the making of the album, Una Vuelta al Sol, was released on Amazon Prime Video in May 2020.

In October 2020 she collaborated with the producer Alizzz on "El Encuentro". He then produced her second album, Cuando no sé quién soy, released on 13 May 2022, which debuted at number two on the Spanish albums chart. Its singles included "Yo invito", "Quiero pero no" with Rojuu, and "La canción que no quiero cantarte" with Aitana. She also released "Yamaguchi", a song named after a park in Pamplona.

In 2023 she made her acting debut in the television series La mesías, and she has also worked on a film titled Bitter Christmas. Her third album, Si abro los ojos no es real, was released in 2025.

Recognition

"El Encuentro" won the Premio MIN for best urban recording. The documentary Una Vuelta al Sol was nominated for Best Long Form Music Video at the 2020 Latin Grammy Awards. For La mesías she was nominated for best supporting actress in a television series at the 11th Feroz Awards. She won the ninth series of Operación Triunfo in 2018 and represented Spain at that year's Eurovision Song Contest.
