Biography
Early life
Camellia is the professional name of Masaya Oya, a Japanese electronic musician and record producer. He was born on 28 September 1992 in Asahikawa, in Hokkaido. He became interested in music very young and, at ten, taught himself to play the piano. In 2003 he began making music on his mother's computer, and his first piece was a theme song for a friend he had met online through a Flash game. He then started uploading original songs to Niconico, a Japanese video-sharing site.
Career
Oya first worked as a Vocaloid producer, writing songs for the Hatsune Miku voice software. His debut album, Honeyginjerale, came out in 2010. In August 2011 he announced a track for Alstroemeria Records, a doujin circle led by Masayoshi Minoshima, the producer behind the well-known Touhou arrangement "Bad Apple!!". Since 2012 he has often worked with the singer and VTuber Nanahira, and together they have made several denpa albums. His 2013 song "Systematic Love" was covered by Reol two years later. After a DJ set at the Vocaloid event Voca Nico Night in July 2013, he was shown on Fuji Television.
At the end of 2013 he left the Vocaloid scene to concentrate on general electronic dance music, and released the album Paroxysm. He composed the theme "Drag the Ground" for the racing team Good Smile Racing in 2014. His tracks are fast, often running at or above 200 beats per minute, and they cover a broad range of styles: J-core, dubstep, denpa, drum and bass, hardcore, gabber, trap and speedcore. A critic, Théo Forey, has noted that he spans many genres rather than staying with one.
He has worked with the label Pony Canyon and belongs to the labels EXITTUNES Dance Production and beatnation Rhyze, while releasing his own catalogue through a doujin circle named KamelCamellia. He came into contact with the label network through DJ Genki. In March 2015 he played a live set at the Exit Tunes Dance Party along with other beatnation Rhyze artists. Oya has described himself as the "engine" of Exit Tunes, saying he hopes to keep the label moving through the volume of songs he writes, and pointing out that few artists can regularly deliver a hundred fast songs a year.
Rhythm games are the area where he is best known. He has written for Sound Voltex, Hatsune Miku: Project Diva, Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage!, Beatmania IIDX, Arcaea and Chunithm. In December 2018 he became a featured artist in osu!, which lets selected tracks of his be used freely in the game, and he has a dedicated fan community there. He wrote three original songs for Beat Saber in 2019 and more in January 2020. One of them, "Ghost", was regarded as among the hardest levels in the game when it came out.
His album Xronial Xero reached the Billboard Japan Top Albums Sales chart on 25 March 2020, peaking at number 68 in its only week there. The same year he composed the soundtrack for the platform game Mad Rat Dead, released as a three-disc album. In July 2022 he worked with the VTuber Houshou Marine of Hololive Production on the single "I'm Your Treasure Box", later included on the album Ahoy!! You're All Pirates, released on 16 October 2024, which sold 21,633 copies in Japan according to Oricon. In August 2022 he collaborated with the Undertale creator Toby Fox on "Summerblue" for Beatmania IIDX 30 Resident, and in June 2026 the two worked together again on tracks for the Deltarune Chapter 5 soundtrack. In February 2024 he teamed up with Robert Topala to bring several of his tracks to the rhythm-platformer Geometry Dash. After the release of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds in September 2025, he contributed a song to a collaboration and took part in arrangements of music from Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Unleashed.
Recognition
In February 2018, Oya received the Outstanding Performance Award at the seventh Konami Arcade Championship Original Song Contest for his song "Xéroa". His Xronial Xero chart placement in 2020 was his appearance on the national sales ranking.
Public roles
Beyond releasing music, Oya streams on Twitch. His YouTube channel had about 491,000 subscribers in July 2025.
