Biography
Early life
Camilo Echeverry Correa was born on 16 March 1994 in Medellín, Colombia, and performs under his first name alone. His childhood home had no radio, but it did hold a shelf of records, including albums by The Beatles, Shakira, Charly García, Facundo Cabral, Mercedes Sosa and Pink Floyd. He has described that collection as the starting point of his wish to make music.
As a child he formed a duo with his sister Manuela, and the two auditioned for the television talent contest Factor XS. They did not advance to the final round. He returned to the competition the next year as a solo performer, won it in 2007, and began his recording career with the single "Regálame Tu Corazón".
Career
In 2008 Camilo appeared on the Colombian telenovelas Super Pá and En los tacones de Eva, and on the children's programme Bichos. He put out the mixtape Tráfico de Sentimientos in 2010 and soon afterward paused his own releases. In 2015 he moved to Miami, where he worked as a songwriter and producer for other performers. Songs he wrote during this period include "Sin Pijama" for Becky G and Natti Natasha, "Veneno" for Anitta, and "Ya No Tiene Novio" for Sebastián Yatra with Mau y Ricky.
He came back as a solo artist in 2018 with a changed look, a handlebar moustache among the changes, and the ukulele-flavoured reggaeton track "Desconocidos", made with Manuel Turizo and Mau y Ricky. In February 2019 he announced a deal with Sony Music Latin, and later that month he took part in the Venezuela Aid Live concert in Cúcuta, Colombia. His single "No Te Vayas" followed on 28 March 2019, and "La Boca", recorded with Mau y Ricky, received a triple-platinum certification. He made his United States television debut at the 2019 Premios Juventud in Miami.
"Tutu", a collaboration with the Puerto Rican singer Pedro Capó, reached number two on the Latin Pop Airplay chart. It appeared on Camilo's first studio album, Por Primera Vez, released on 17 April 2020, which opened at number one on the Billboard Latin Pop Albums chart. The follow-up, Mis Manos, arrived in March 2021 with guest appearances from Evaluna Montaner, Mau y Ricky, El Alfa and Los Dos Carnales. De Adentro Pa' Fuera came in September 2022 with contributions from Myke Towers and Alejandro Sanz, and the album cuatro, which draws on pambiche, cumbia and salsa, was released in May 2024. His singles from the early 2020s include "Vida de rico", "Despeinada", "999" with Selena Gomez, and "Pegao". He has also recorded with Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello, Karol G and Diljit Dosanjh.
His music is generally described as Latin pop blended with urban rhythms, and he has named the Uruguayan singer-songwriter Jorge Drexler as a major influence.
Recognition
Camilo has won six Latin Grammy Awards. At the 2020 ceremony he took Best Pop Song for "Tutu". In 2021 he won Best Pop Song, Best Tropical Song and Best Urban Fusion/Performance, and Mis Manos received the award for Best Pop Vocal Album. In 2023 he won Best Long Form Music Video. He has also been nominated for three Grammy Awards.
Personal life
Camilo married the singer Evaluna Montaner in February 2020, after about five years together. She is the daughter of the Argentine-Venezuelan singer and songwriter Ricardo Montaner and the sister of Mau y Ricky, the duo with whom Camilo has often worked. The couple have children.
