His hometown made him an honorary citizen in 1992 and named a street after him in 2014. He has also supported the town in other ways, including by sponsoring the renovation of its church and writing the foreword to an official travel guide, and he backed Almería's successful bid to host the 2005 Mediterranean Games.

In 1990 he reached a national audience for the first time with the programme Coplas de mi ser on Cadena SER. He subsequently worked for a series of other broadcasters, including Canal Sur, Radio Nacional de España, Onda Cero and Cadena COPE.

By his programme's audience figures, around two million listeners tuned in, a total second only to the Cadena SER show Hoy por hoy. On 1 September 2015 he began broadcasting on COPE. His first programme there featured King Juan Carlos I, the former prime minister José María Aznar and Pedro Sánchez, who later became prime minister, as guests. In September 2020 his contract with COPE was extended until 2025, and in June 2025 it was extended again for a further season. The station pointed to coverage of the 2016 United States presidential election, the 2024 Spanish floods and the funeral of Pope Francis among his highlights, and he had interviewed the pope in September 2021.

Beyond radio, Herrera made a cameo appearance in the Spanish television comedy 7 vidas. He is listed in reference works as both a journalist and a television presenter.

In July 2023 the Supreme Court of Spain upheld a sentence against him for tax evasion relating to income that passed through a company between 2006 and 2007, when he was under contract with Onda Cero.

Recognition

Herrera has won seven honours listed in reference works. Five of them are Premios Ondas, awarded in 1987, 1996, 2000, 2010 and 2019.
