Biography

Early life

Darren Bent was born on 6 February 1984 in Tooting, south London, to a family of Jamaican descent, and grew up in Thornton Heath. His father, Mervyn, played in the youth systems of Wimbledon and Brentford. When Darren was ten the family moved to Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, where he went to Hinchingbrooke School and played for the Godmanchester Rovers youth side. At school he competed in the long jump for England Schools. His uncle Junior Bent and cousin Cory Bent also became professional footballers.

Career

Bent joined Ipswich Town as a teenager, having considered a career in athletics, and signed his first professional contract in July 2001. He made his first-team debut that November in a UEFA Cup tie against Helsingborg. His breakthrough came in 2002-03, when he scored 18 goals and won the club's Young Player of the Year award. He was Ipswich's top scorer in 2003-04 with 16 goals, including a hat-trick against Walsall, and shared the top spot the following season with 20. Ipswich lost in the play-offs in both of those years.

In June 2005 he moved to Charlton Athletic for an initial fee of 2.5 million pounds. He scored twice on his debut against Sunderland, was named Premier League Player of the Month for August and finished 2005-06 as the highest-scoring Englishman in the league with 18 goals. Charlton named him their player of the year. He was again the club's leading scorer in 2006-07, although the team was relegated.

Tottenham Hotspur signed him in June 2007 for a club-record fee of 16.5 million pounds. He was an unused substitute when Tottenham won the League Cup final in February 2008, and he scored his 100th career goal a few weeks later. In 2008-09 he was Tottenham's top scorer with 17 goals, including his first hat-trick for the club, against Dinamo Zagreb.

He joined Sunderland in August 2009 and scored on his debut. In 2009-10 he scored 25 goals in all competitions, 24 of them in the Premier League, which was half of his side's league total, and he was named Sunderland's Player of the Year. In January 2011 he moved to Aston Villa in a deal that was reported as a club record. He scored on his debut against Manchester City and ended the season with 17 league goals, the most among English players and the fourth most overall. In February 2012 he scored his 100th Premier League goal, against Queens Park Rangers. An ankle injury later that month ended his season. He remained Villa's top scorer that year with 10 goals.

He then went on loan to Fulham for the 2013-14 season, scoring six goals, and to Brighton & Hove Albion in late 2014. A loan at Derby County early in 2015 brought 12 goals in 17 appearances, and after Villa released him that June he signed for Derby permanently. In January 2018 he was loaned to Burton Albion. He announced his retirement from playing on 25 July 2019.

International career

Bent represented England at under-15, under-16, under-19 and under-21 levels. He scored seven goals in eight appearances for the under-15s and, for the under-21s, nine goals in fourteen appearances. He made his senior England debut on 1 March 2006 in a friendly against Uruguay at Anfield. He was left out of the 2010 World Cup squad when it was trimmed to 23 players. He scored his first senior goal on 7 September 2010 in a European Championship qualifier against Switzerland, and he went on to make 13 senior appearances and score four goals. He did not travel to Euro 2012.

Recognition

His honours include the Football League Cup with Tottenham in 2007-08, the Victory Shield with England's under-15s in 1999 and a series of individual awards: Ipswich Town Young Player of the Year (2002-03), Premier League Player of the Month (August 2005), Charlton Athletic Player of the Year (2005-06) and Sunderland Player of the Year (2009-10). He was inducted into the Ipswich Town Hall of Fame in 2026.

Public roles

After retiring as a player, Bent became a radio presenter with talkSPORT. In 2019 he took part in the BBC programme Celebrity Mastermind.
