Biography
Early life
Douglas Silva was born on 27 September 1988 in Rio de Janeiro. He is a Brazilian actor and screenwriter who is also known by the short name DG. Alongside acting he has worked as a singer, and at one stage he was the vocalist of a band called Soul Mais Samba. His screen career began while he was still a child, when he was cast in a film that would shape the early part of his working life.
Career
Silva made his acting debut in City of God (2002), directed by Fernando Meirelles. He played the childhood version of the character Dadinho, known in English as Li'l Dice. The film is recorded with a worldwide box office of $30.7 million, and it remains the title most closely tied to his name. For the role he was nominated for the Grande Otelo award for best supporting actor as a teenager, and he won the best actor award at the Havana International Festival.
Television followed quickly. From 2002 to 2005 he played Acerola in Cidade dos Homens (City of Men), a series broadcast by TV Globo. A film of the same name, released in 2007, grew out of the series, and Meirelles is credited as director on two of Silva's listed titles. His work as Acerola brought him a nomination for the International Emmy as best actor, which made him the first Brazilian actor to be nominated in that category. Years later he returned to the character when the fifth and sixth seasons of the series aired in 2017 and 2018.
In 2008 he appeared in two further films. In Blindness he is part of a large international cast, and in Last Stop 174 he played the character Patola. In 2013 he is credited as both writer and director of City of God – 10 Years Later, a project that looked back at the original film. His later television work includes the series Samantha! (2018) and Anderson Spider Silva (2023). In all, five films and two television series appear in his credits between 2002 and 2023.
In 2022 he was named among the twenty participants in the twenty-second season of the reality programme Big Brother Brasil, broadcast on TV Globo, and he finished the season in third place. As of October 2026 he had about three million followers on Instagram, his largest audience on record.
Recognition
Silva's recognition is closely linked to his earliest roles. His performance as the young Dadinho earned a Grande Otelo nomination and the best actor award at the Havana International Festival. His portrayal of Acerola led to the International Emmy nomination for best actor, a first for a Brazilian performer. Taken together, these honours came from work he did as a teenager and young adult, and they are the awards most often cited in descriptions of his career.
Personal life
Silva is based in Brazil, where he was born and where most of his work has been produced. Beyond the public record of his acting, writing and music, he has not made other details of his private life a feature of his career, and none are included here.
