Biography

Early life

Gian Marco Javier Zignago Alcóver was born on 17 August 1970 in Lima, Peru. His mother is the actress and singer Regina Alcover, and his father was a composer and singer, so music and theatre were present in the household from the start. He travelled with his parents as a child and took part in school performances, playing guitar and singing. His first appearances on television came when he was about twelve, on programmes broadcast from Buenos Aires and Caracas. After finishing school he went to Santiago, Chile, to study graphic design, and he began to perform in clubs in Santiago and Viña del Mar.

Career

He returned to Lima after about eighteen months. One of his songs reached the national selection for the 1989 OTI Festival, and he signed his first recording contract. His first album, Historias, was released in 1990, followed in 1992 by Personal, which was made in Chile. In 1993 he won the national selection and represented Peru at the OTI Festival with the song "Volvamos a empezar". During the 1990s he also hosted a popular television game show, Campaneando, which made him familiar to a wider Peruvian audience, and he put out Entre la arena y la luna, Señora, Cuénteme, a tribute to Peruvian criolla music, and Al quinto día in 1997.

Seeking an international audience, he moved to the United States, where the producer Emilio Estefan hired him as a songwriter and performer. A tiempo (2002) was released through Sony and brought him three Latin Grammy nominations. In 2003 he received a prize for emerging Latin artist from the Spanish authors' society SGAE. The next album, Resucitar (2004), produced the singles "Sin querer", "Gota de lluvia" and "Lejos de ti".

In 2005 he gave a concert at the Estadio Monumental in Peru to mark fifteen years in music, in front of more than 40,000 people. The compilation Grandes éxitos came out in 2006. That year he also recorded the title song for the animated film Dragons: Destiny of Fire, his only screen credit on record, and released the album 8, which includes the single "No te avisa". Later albums followed in quick succession: Desde adentro (2008), the live recording En vivo desde El Lunario (2009), En tiempo real (2010), Días nuevos (2011), 20 años (2012), Versiones (2013) and Libre (2015). 20 años marked two decades of work and contains re-recorded songs together with new ones. In 2012 his label in Mexico recognised more than 400,000 copies sold in Latin America with a quadruple platinum certification. His records are classed as pop and pop rock.

He has also written for other artists, among them Marc Anthony, Gloria Estefan, Jon Secada and Alejandro Fernández, and has composed for several other singers in the Latin market.

Recognition

Gian Marco has won the Latin Grammy Award for best singer-songwriter album three times: in 2005 for Resucitar, in 2011 for Días nuevos and in 2012 for 20 años. In 2007 Peru named him a Grand Officer of the Order of the Sun, one of the country's national honours. Counting these and other entries, his record lists four awards won.

He serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Peru. He also appeared in advertising for Peruvian and international brands, including the soft drink Inca Kola. Gian Marco has a large online following, with more than two million Instagram followers when last counted in October 2026 and about 685,000 YouTube subscribers in May 2025.
