Early life

Katya Lel was born Yekaterina Nikolayevna Chuprinina on 20 September 1974 in Nalchik, then part of the Kabardino-Balkar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and now in the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic, where she grew up. Her father bought her a piano when she was three, and she began studying music at a children's art school at seven. She continued at the North Caucasus Institute of Arts and, while still a student, spent six years as a soloist with the vocal and instrumental ensemble "Nalchik" at the city's House of Culture.

In 1994 she enrolled in the vocal department of the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music in Moscow, where her teachers included Joseph Kobzon and Lev Leshchenko. That year she won the competition "Musical Start - 1994". After she gave Leshchenko a demo tape of her songs, he offered her a job, and she began working at the Lev Leshchenko Theater. She graduated from the academy in 1998 with top honours.

Career

Following her graduation in 1998, Lel started a solo career with the album Yeliseyskiye polya, also known by the French-language title Champs Elysee. In 2000 she took the stage name Katya Lel and changed her name officially. The surname comes from a character in Rimsky-Korsakov's opera The Snow Maiden, a shepherd who personifies spring and love.

A second album, Talisman, appeared in 1999, followed by Sama in 2000 and Mezhdu nami in 2002. In 2003 she began working with the producer Maxim Fadeev. That February she released the song "Moy Marmeladny", which later gained a second life: in November 2023 a sped-up version spread widely as a video trend on TikTok, in which users lip-synced to the track while wearing fur clothing and hats with ear flaps.

Her later albums include Dzhaga-dzhaga (2004), Kruchu-verchu (2005), Ya tvoya (2008), Solntse lyubvi (2013), Moya tema (2019) and Siyaniye (2020). Reference sources class her music as estrada and pop. She also took a screen role in the film The Undiamond Arm, a credit that is among the works associated with her name.

Her reach online is considerable. Her Instagram account was listed with about 3.2 million followers in October 2026, and her YouTube channel had roughly 315,000 subscribers in March 2025.

Recognition

She holds the title People's Artist of the Chechen Republic. In 2025 she was also named a Merited Artist of the Russian Federation.

Personal life

From 2008 to 2023 Lel was married to the businessman Igor Kuznetsov, and the couple have a daughter. Reference sources give her height as 164 centimetres and record her occupations as singer and songwriter.
