Biography

Early life

Lucie Bethan Jones was born on 20 March 1991 in Pentyrch, a village just outside Cardiff, and she is a British singer and actor. She attended Radyr Comprehensive School. As a teenager she was active in the Scouting movement. In 2007 she went to the World Scout Jamboree, where she was the main performer of its theme song, "Jambo", and she also took part in Cardiff's Scout and Guide Gang Show.

Career

Jones first became widely known in 2009 as a contestant on the sixth series of The X Factor in the United Kingdom. She auditioned with "I Will Always Love You" and reached the live shows with Dannii Minogue as her mentor. She was eliminated in the fifth week of live shows, after the result in a final showdown went to deadlock.

After the show she signed with a modelling agency. In May 2010 producer Cameron Mackintosh cast her as Cosette in the West End production of Les Misérables. In the same year she appeared in an episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures, and in September she was announced as the face of a lingerie advertising campaign. She played Meat in the 2013 arena tour of We Will Rock You and Victoria in the musical American Psycho at the Almeida Theatre that December.

Her stage and screen work continued through the middle of the decade. In February 2015 she appeared as Melody Carver in an episode of Midsomer Murders. She was cast as Molly in the Chinese tour of Ghost the Musical, and in 2016 she played Elle Woods in Legally Blonde at Curve and Maureen Johnson in the UK tour of Rent. She was Holly in the UK tour of The Wedding Singer in the summer of 2017. From September 2017 to June 2018 she returned to Legally Blonde for a UK tour. Her album Believe came out in 2015.

In January 2017 she entered Eurovision: You Decide, the British national final for the Eurovision Song Contest, with "Never Give Up on You", a song co-written by Emmelie de Forest, the 2013 contest winner. She won the televised final on 27 January 2017 and went on to represent the United Kingdom at the contest in Kyiv. She performed eighteenth in the Grand Final and finished in 15th place with 111 points, receiving 12 points from the Australian professional jury.

Jones returned to musical theatre in 2019, making her debut as Jenna in Waitress on 17 June, a role previously played by Katharine McPhee. The West End run was cut short in March 2020 by the closure of theatres during the COVID-19 pandemic, and she played Jenna again on the rescheduled UK and Ireland tour that began on 4 September 2021. Before the closure, she gave her first solo concert at the Adelphi Theatre on 16 February 2020, and a live album, Lucie Jones: Live at the Adelphi, followed on 25 September 2020.

In summer 2021 she took the role of Fantine in the West End production of Les Misérables, finishing on 29 August 2021 so she could rejoin the Waitress tour. On 1 February 2022 she made her debut as Elphaba in Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London, a run that ended on 4 March 2023. Three weeks later she went back to Les Misérables as Fantine, taking over from Ava Brennan.

Her concert work grew through those years. She toured nationally with The Fulltone Orchestra in April and May 2023 and gave a solo concert at Cadogan Hall in May 2024, with Alfie Boe and Sam Ryder as guests. In April 2024 she played Catherine in the London concert production of Pippin for the show's 50th anniversary. That summer she played Genevieve in The Baker's Wife at the Menier Chocolate Factory. She has given an annual Christmas concert at The Gate Arts Centre in Cardiff in December 2024 and 2025. In September and October 2025 she starred as Jenna Rink in the premiere of the musical 13 Going on 30 at the Manchester Opera House, after a first workshop at the Battersea Arts Centre in October 2023. On 16 February 2026 she played a sold-out solo show at the London Palladium.

Recognition

Her recorded work includes the album Believe (2015) and the single "Never Give Up on You" (2017). It is classified as pop, and piano is among her listed instruments. Her Eurovision placing in 2017 stands as her main competitive result, alongside stage roles in Waitress, Wicked and Les Misérables.
