Biography

Luis Buñuel (1900–1983) was a Spanish director from Calanda. His death was on 29 July 1983, at the age of 83. Among his screen credits are The Phantom of Liberty (1974) and The Milky Way (1969).

Early life

He went on to study at College of the Savior, Zaragoza and Complutense University of Madrid.

Career

He appears in Carmen (1926), the earliest title among his listed credits. Un Chien Andalou (1929) is among his 1920s credits. In the 1930s, he appeared in L’Age d’Or (1930) and Juan Simón's Daughter (1935). The 1950s brought The Proud and the Beautiful (1953). His 1960s credits include Weeping for a Bandit (1964) and Belle de Jour (1967).

He had 46 films on record from 1926 to 2008. That Obscure Object of Desire (1977) is the final credit listed before his death. The records also name him as director on 34 titles, including The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, and writer on 35 titles, including Viridiana.

His work is filed under surrealism. Work listed as notable includes The Exterminating Angel, Los Olvidados and Nazarín.

Recognition

He won the Palme d'Or. His other honours include the BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay (1974) and a Cannes Best Director Award (1951).
