Synopsis

Brokeback Mountain is a 2005 romantic drama directed by Ang Lee, adapted from a short story by Annie Proulx. Set in the American West, it follows two young men whose lives are tied together over a span of two decades.

In 1963, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, take seasonal jobs herding sheep on a remote mountain in Wyoming. The two are strangers at first, reserved and watchful, and they spend the summer far from town with only the flock, the weather and each other for company. Out there, with little to say and no one to say it to, a bond forms that neither of them expected and neither knows how to name.

When the season ends, they go separate ways and return to the lives that seem expected of them. Ennis settles into marriage with Alma, played by Michelle Williams, while Jack's path leads elsewhere, eventually to a relationship with Lureen. Anne Hathaway appears in the cast as part of Jack's world. The years that follow are shaped by distance, family obligations and the pressures of the time and place they live in. The film moves slowly across the decades, using quiet landscapes and spare dialogue to show how a single summer continues to shape two ordinary men long after it is over.
