Synopsis
Iron Man is a 2008 superhero film directed by Jon Favreau, based on the Marvel Comics character. It is also the film that began the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it introduces a hero who builds his own powers from scratch rather than being born with them.
Robert Downey Jr. plays Tony Stark, a brilliant engineer and the head of a major weapons company. Stark is confident, wealthy and used to getting his own way. His business sells advanced military technology, and he has never had to think much about where it ends up. A demonstration trip overseas changes that. After an attack on the convoy he is travelling with, he is taken captive and held in a remote location by a militant group that expects him to build a weapon for them.
Instead of complying, Stark uses his skills to work on something different. He is helped by Ho Yinsen, a fellow prisoner played by Shaun Toub, and the two of them improvise equipment from whatever scraps they can find. Back home, Stark is a changed man. His friend Colonel James Rhodes, played by Terrence Howard, and his assistant Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) watch as he begins to question the family business. Jeff Bridges plays Obadiah Stane, a senior figure at the company. The film follows Stark as he decides what to do with what he has learned, and begins designing a new kind of armour.
