Synopsis

Saving Private Ryan is a 1998 war drama directed by Steven Spielberg. It is set in June 1944, in the days after the Allied landings in Normandy during the Second World War.

The film starts on the beach, where American troops come ashore under heavy fire. Captain John H. Miller, played by Tom Hanks, gets a unit moving inland. Shortly afterwards, he receives an unusual assignment. Army command has learned that three brothers from the same family have died in combat, and the fourth, Private First Class James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon), is somewhere behind enemy lines with the airborne troops. Miller is told to find him and bring him home.

He picks a small squad for the job, including Tom Sizemore as Technical Sergeant Mike Horvath, Edward Burns as Private Richard Reiben, Jeremy Davies as the inexperienced interpreter Corporal Timothy Upham, Adam Goldberg as Private Stanley Mellish and Barry Pepper as Private Daniel Jackson.

As the group moves across the French countryside, searching through villages and ruined fields, doubts arise among the men about risking several lives to save one soldier.
