Synopsis

Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 drama directed by Danny Boyle, with Loveleen Tandan credited as co-director. It mixes romance, crime and coming-of-age storytelling and is set in India.

The story centers on Jamal Malik, played by Dev Patel as a young man and by Tanay Chheda as a child. Jamal grew up in the slums of Mumbai and now works in a call centre. Against expectation, he lands a place on the Indian edition of the quiz show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and keeps answering questions correctly, moving one step from the top prize.

His run makes the presenter and the production team suspicious. A boy with so little schooling, they reason, cannot possibly know so much, and Jamal is handed over to the police. During questioning, he explains each answer by pointing to a moment from his own past. The film moves back and forth between the interrogation room, the studio and his childhood, showing the streets where he lived with his brother Salim and the girl he cared about.

Freida Pinto, Madhur Mittal, Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan and Mahesh Manjrekar also appear in the cast.
