Synopsis
Spider-Man is a 2002 superhero film directed by Sam Raimi, based on the Marvel Comics character. It combines action with a coming-of-age story, and it is the first entry in Raimi's trilogy about the hero.
Tobey Maguire plays Peter Parker, a shy teenager in New York City who lives with his Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson) and Aunt May (Rosemary Harris). At school he is overlooked and an easy target for bullies. His closest friend is Harry Osborn, played by James Franco, and he has a long-standing crush on the girl next door, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst).
During a class trip to a science laboratory, Peter is bitten by a specially bred spider. In the days that follow, he notices his body changing: he is stronger and quicker, his senses are sharper, and he can stick to walls. Peter is at first more interested in what these abilities can do for him personally, and he tries to use them to make some money and impress people. He is soon forced to think harder about what responsibility means, and he starts to wear a costume and swing across the city. Elsewhere, Harry's father Norman Osborn, played by Willem Dafoe, is a driven businessman whose own experiments begin to take him in a dark direction. J. K. Simmons plays J. Jonah Jameson, the newspaper editor who has strong opinions about the new masked figure in the city.
