Synopsis
Titanic is a 1997 epic romance and disaster film directed by James Cameron. It is told in flashback, moving between the late twentieth century and the maiden voyage of the ocean liner in April 1912.
In the present-day thread, a salvage team searches the wreck of the ship for a valuable diamond necklace. Their search leads them to an elderly woman who says she can explain what became of it, and she begins to describe her youth aboard the liner.
As a young woman, Rose DeWitt Bukater, played by Kate Winslet, travels in first class with her mother Ruth (Frances Fisher) and her wealthy fiance Caledon Hockley (Billy Zane). She feels trapped by the future arranged for her. Onboard she meets Jack Dawson, a penniless artist played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who won his passage in a card game. Their friendship grows quickly across the class divide, even as the engagement and the strict social order around them push back. The cast also includes Kathy Bates as Margaret Brown, Bernard Hill as Captain Edward Smith and Jonathan Hyde as J. Bruce Ismay. The film combines a love story with a detailed recreation of the ship and the world of its passengers, both the privileged and the poor, as the voyage begins.
