Biography
Early life
Sam Kim was born on 19 February 1998 in Federal Way. He attended Todd Beamer High School. His Korean-language stage name is written 샘김. Guitar is listed among his instruments, and soul is among the genres associated with his music.
Career
Kim's route into the Korean music industry ran through television. After passing the preliminary auditions held in Los Angeles, he moved to South Korea as a teenager to take part in the third season of the talent programme K-pop Star in 2014. He finished the competition in second place, and You Hee-yeol, who was one of the judges and the head of the label Antenna Music, signed him to the company.
His first release came in 2016. A first part of his debut project, titled My Name Is Sam, appeared on 28 March 2016 and held three tracks, one of which was the pre-release single "Mama Don't Worry". The fuller release, I Am Sam, followed on 10 April 2016, with "No 눈치 (No Sense)", a collaboration with the rapper Crush, as its lead single. On the day it came out, Kim made his first stage appearance as a debuting artist at the finale of K-pop Star 5.
In October 2018 he published the music video for "Make Up", again featuring Crush, ahead of his studio album Sun and Moon. The album arrived on 22 November 2018 together with a video for its second single, "It's You", on which Zico is a featured artist. He is credited as a songwriter and producer on a number of his own and other artists' songs, and the Korea Music Copyright Association database lists his songwriting credits.
In February 2019 he gave his first headlining concerts, titled Sun and Moon, in Seoul over two days. That spring he toured Europe, performing in Paris, London and Berlin at the end of April, and in July he played a concert in Singapore. A second Seoul series, Sam Kim Live: Kunge, took place in November 2019. Before then he had joined label-wide concerts with other Antenna artists in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Los Angeles and New York, including Hello, Antenna in 2016, Antenna Angels Concert in 2017 and With, Antenna in 2017. He also opened for Charlie Puth in Seoul in August 2016 and for Tom Misch on the latter's Asia tour in Seoul in August 2018.
In March 2024, Antenna announced that Kim was leaving the company after ten years with the label, describing the parting as amicable. Six months later, in September 2024, it was reported that he had signed with Herbigharo, the company run by the singer Park Hyo-shin.
