The Office
The Office is a 2005 NBC TV series. It stars Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski and others.
Synopsis
The Office is an American sitcom made in the mockumentary style, which means the story is told as though a film crew has settled into a workplace to record daily life. It aired on NBC and was adapted from an earlier British comedy of the same name.
The setting is the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin, a regional paper supply company. Nothing dramatic happens in the building, and that is the point. The series finds its humour in meetings that run too long, awkward announcements and small rivalries over desks, snacks and status.
At the centre is the branch manager, Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell. He badly wants to be seen as a great boss and a good friend, and he rarely notices the gap between those goals and how his colleagues actually see him. Rainn Wilson plays Dwight Schrute, an intensely serious salesman who takes his job and his rank very seriously. John Krasinski plays Jim Halpert, a witty salesman who copes with the routine by playing pranks, often at Dwight's expense. Jenna Fischer plays Pam Beesly, the receptionist, and B. J. Novak plays Ryan Howard, a temporary worker new to the staff. The opening season introduces the office and its habits one person at a time, letting the cameras linger on glances and reactions. Over time the cast grows to include Ed Helms as Andy Bernard and others, but the premise stays the same: ordinary people, a dull business and an ever-present camera.
