Biography

Early life

Tyson Fury was born on 12 August 1988 in Manchester and spent his childhood in Styal, Cheshire. His family is of Irish Traveller background and has a long connection with the ring: his father, John Fury, fought as a bare-knuckle and unlicensed boxer before turning professional in the 1980s, and a number of cousins also box. The nickname "Gypsy King" comes from this heritage. Fury is British, stands 206 cm tall, and began boxing at the age of ten. He left school at eleven and worked alongside his father and brothers laying tarmac. His father coached him until 2011, after which his uncles Hughie Fury and Peter Fury took over his training.

As an amateur he boxed for both England and Ireland. He won bronze at the 2006 World Junior Championships, gold at the 2007 EU Junior Championships and silver at that year's European Junior Championships. In 2008 he took the ABA super-heavyweight title, finishing his amateur days with a record of 31 wins and four defeats. He did not box at the 2008 Olympics, because the single British place in his weight class went to David Price. He turned professional later that year.

Career

Fury made his professional debut on 6 December 2008 in Nottingham, stopping Bela Gyongyosi in the first round. In 2009 he won the English heavyweight title on points against John McDermott, a decision that drew criticism and led to a rematch, which he won by stoppage in 2010. On 23 July 2011 he beat Derek Chisora over twelve rounds at Wembley Arena to claim the British and Commonwealth titles. The following year he won the Irish title against Martin Rogan in Belfast.

He made his United States debut in April 2013 at Madison Square Garden, where he was knocked down by Steve Cunningham before stopping him in the seventh round. In November 2014 he beat Chisora again, winning the European title when his opponent's corner halted the contest after ten rounds.

On 28 November 2015 in Düsseldorf, Fury beat Wladimir Klitschko by unanimous decision and took the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO and The Ring heavyweight titles. The IBF removed its belt ten days later because of a rematch clause in the contract. In 2016 he gave up his remaining titles, and he did not return to the ring until June 2018, when he beat Sefer Seferi and then Francesco Pianeta in August.

On 1 December 2018 in Los Angeles he fought Deontay Wilder to a split-decision draw for the WBC title. After wins over Tom Schwarz and Otto Wallin in Las Vegas in 2019, he faced Wilder again on 22 February 2020 and won when Wilder's corner stopped the fight in the seventh round. That result gave him the WBC and Ring titles. The third meeting took place on 9 October 2021 and ended with an eleventh-round knockout for Fury after both men had been put down during the fight.

On 23 April 2022 he stopped Dillian Whyte in the sixth round at Wembley Stadium in front of a reported crowd of 94,000, a record for a boxing event in Europe. He announced his retirement afterwards, then came back and beat Chisora a third time on 3 December 2022 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. On 28 October 2023 in Riyadh he faced former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in the latter's professional boxing debut and won by split decision after being knocked down in the third round.

Recognition

Fury has won The Ring magazine's Fighter of the Year award twice, in 2015 and 2020, and was named its Comeback of the Year in 2018. He also received the Ali–Frazier Award in 2021 and again in 2024. His record of heavyweight belts includes the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC, WBO and The Ring titles. After the second Wilder fight he became the third heavyweight, after Floyd Patterson and Muhammad Ali, to hold The Ring title twice.
