Biography

Early life

Yosra El Lozy is an Egyptian actress who was born on 8 August 1985 in Zamalek, Cairo. Her father is Egyptian and her mother is Syrian. As a child she enjoyed football, swimming and ballet.

She studied at the American University in Cairo, where her main subject was political science, with minors in theatre and modern history. At the university she took part in stage productions, including The Sultan's Dilemma, Sulayman El Halabi and The Reader.

Career

El Lozy made her professional debut at sixteen in Alexandria... New York, directed by Youssef Chahine, in which she played the young version of a character named Ginger. She then put acting aside for about four years to concentrate on her studies. She has said that she considered scripts during that time but found none that appealed to her. The director Osama Fawzy cast her in Bel-Alwan el-Tabe'eya after seeing her in the Chahine film. Her character in it is a young woman torn between the man she loves and her religious convictions.

She also appeared in Stolen Kisses (2008), the earliest credit listed for her. In 2009 she worked on independent cinema with the young director Ahmad Abdalla, playing in Heliopolis alongside Khaled Abol Naga, Hanan Motawie and Hany Adel. The same group later reunited for Microphone, a production by Mohamed Hefzy and Abol Naga that was named best Arab film at the Cairo International Film Festival and won the Tanit d'or at the Carthage Film Festival. She has received awards from regional and international festivals for her work in Stolen Kisses, Bel-Alwan el-Tabe'eya, Heliopolis and Microphone.

Around 2010 she took smaller parts on television and in cinema before landing larger ones. In the television series Al-Gama'a she played Cherine, a patriotic television presenter, in a production that drew a great deal of discussion across the Arab region for its scale and its controversial subject. In the romantic comedy Ezaet Hob, released in 2011 with Menna Shalabi, she played Farida, an energetic and outgoing friend of Shalabi's more conservative character, Leila. El Lozy described the film's story as one about friends who do not share the same views yet remain close.

Her later credits include No Trespassing or Cameras Allowed (2017), Mommies Group (2023), The Feast Night (2024) and Saqr w Kanarya (2026), along with the series Lam Shamsiyya. In all she has seven credits listed, six of them films, between 2008 and 2026. She has also dubbed several foreign films and television series into Arabic.

El Lozy has spoken about the kind of career she wants. She said that she wanted to be chosen for roles because she suited them, not because of her appearance, and that she acts for the enjoyment of it. She has said that her generation of actors was tired of familiar plots and wanted to bring new kinds of stories to Egyptian film.

Public roles

She describes herself as a Nasserist and has taken part in demonstrations. One of them called for the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador from Egypt, in connection with the Lebanese civil war. In 2011 she joined the protests of the Egyptian revolution, which led to the fall of President Hosni Mubarak. In a street interview she said that the country had a corrupt system which everyone, rich or poor, should oppose.

Personal life

She has two daughters, born in 2014 and 2020. After the birth of her first child she turned down many roles, and she accepted a place on the television show The X Factor because the production allowed her to bring her baby with her.
