Early life

Tomas Henry Gaynor, who records and performs as Allday, was born on 21 February 1991 in Adelaide. He grew up in the suburb of Blackwood and went to Blackwood High School and later Mercedes College. A short-lived punk band he played in during his school years was what first drew him toward making music. He has said that he began writing songs at the age of eleven, although he had no equipment and did not start recording until he was eighteen.

Career

Gaynor began releasing music as Allday in 2011, putting his tracks online for free. His first mixtape, Noue Yesue, came out in September 2011 and was followed by Soon I'll Be in Cali. The same year he also tried stand-up comedy and reached the national final of the Raw Comedy competition, finishing as runner-up.

In February 2012 he moved to Melbourne. He enrolled in a screenwriting course there but left it to concentrate on music. On 3 May 2012 he put out A Skateboard Soirée through Bandcamp. The release received national airplay on Triple J, and he and the producer C1 were named Unearthed Artist of the Week. Its single "So Good" reached number 91 in the station's Hottest 100 for 2012. He closed that year with another free mixtape, Euphoria, which included production from C1, Soul Marauder, Savo and Woodz. In April 2013 he released Loners Are Cool, which peaked at number 18 on the ARIA chart, and in July of that year he issued Soon I'll Be in Cali 2.

Allday signed with OneTwo Records in December 2013 and released the single "Claude Monet". He toured Australia in May and June 2014 on the Right Now National Tour, visiting Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. His first album to reach shops nationally, Startup Cult, followed in July 2014 and rose to number three on the ARIA Albums Chart a week after release. A headlining tour of Australia supported it, and in December 2014 he released the single "Wolves" with Sunni Colón.

In 2015 he appeared on "Dynamite" by the Tasmanian singer Asta and on "For Him." by Troye Sivan, from the album Blue Neighbourhood, which came out on 4 December 2015. He also released the mixtape Soft Grunge Love Rap in July of that year, saying he had made it quickly because his album was taking a long time. The single "Grammy" came from it.

His 2016 singles included "Monster Truck", produced by his frequent collaborator Cam Bluff and released on 23 June after a delay at his label, Wind Up Records. "Sides", featuring Nyne, followed on 15 July and was the lead single from his second album. "Send Nudes" came out on 24 August and entered the top ten of the iTunes hip-hop chart, and "Raceway" followed in December. In March 2017 he announced the album Speeding and released "In Motion", made with the Australian producer Japanese Wallpaper. Speeding appeared on 21 April 2017, and he toured regional Australia with Arno Faraji and Kinder as support acts. Also in 2017 he relocated to Los Angeles.

"Wonder Drug", released in November 2018, led his third album, Starry Night Over the Phone. The record came out on 12 July 2019 and peaked at number seven in Australia, giving him his third top-ten album. He returned to Melbourne in 2019 to renew his visa and remained there.

His fourth studio album, Drinking with My Smoking Friends, was released on 28 May 2021 and reached number 13 on the ARIA chart. He followed it with the standalone single "Eyes on the Prize" in November 2021. In September 2022 he released "Runtrack" and announced an Australian tour starting that November, and on 7 October 2022 he released Excuse Me. In February 2024 he put out "Access", the lead single from his fifth studio album, The Necklace, scheduled for release on 2 August 2024, and a national tour was announced in May 2024.

Allday has named Silverchair, Frank Ocean and TLC among the acts that influenced his work. His music is classed as hip-hop and indie pop, and he is described as a rapper, singer and songwriter.
