Biography
Early life
Anly was born on 20 January 1997 on Iejima, a small island off the coast of Okinawa, Japan. When she was six, her father bought her a guitar. The household had no computer or internet connection, so her musical education came largely from the blues and rock CDs her father collected. He taught her the basic chords, and she worked out the rest by herself; by third grade she was picking out songs by ear.
She had wanted to sing from an early age, but because she wanted to perform her own material she began writing lyrics in her second year of junior high school, and in the third year she started composing melodies as well. At that point she began to think of herself as a future singer-songwriter. Iejima has no high school, so she moved to Naha to continue her education. There she played trombone in the marching band, writing songs in the gaps between rehearsals, and in her second year she left the band to concentrate on becoming a professional musician.
Career
Anly started out in live houses, first on Iejima and then in Naha. Her first independent single, "Sixteen", was released on 19 January 2015. After finishing high school that spring, she was chosen to open for the singer Miwa at a venue in Naha in June, during Miwa's acoustic tour Acoguissimo. Later in 2015 she was noticed at a live house in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, and the radio station J-Wave hired her as a reporter covering the Fuji Rock Festival and the Summer Sonic Festival. Her second independent single, "Bye-Bye", arrived on 26 August 2015 and included her cover of Gabrielle Aplin's "Please Don't Say You Love Me".
She signed to Sony Music Records in 2015 and made her major-label debut on 25 November with the single "Taiyō ni Warae". Two more singles followed in 2016: "Egao / Ii no" in March and "Emergency" in June, the latter carrying a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" as a B-side. In January 2017 she released "Kara no Kokoro", which served as the last opening theme of the anime Naruto: Shippuden. That year she also played a musician in the film Shinjuku Swan II, recorded the single "Kono Yami o Terasu Hikari no Mukō ni" with the duo Sukima Switch in March, and put out her first studio album, Anly One, on 26 April. Two more singles came later in 2017: "Hokuto Shichisei" in August and "Venus" in November, with a cover of the Beatles' "Come Together" on the second.
In 2018 she released "Beautiful" on 28 February, which included a cover of Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You"; the song became the ending theme for the anime The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments. Her second album, Loop, appeared on 25 July 2018, and "Sunshine" was issued as a digital single in December. In October 2019 she worked with the composer Hiroyuki Sawano on "Tranquility", used as an ending theme for the film series Legend of the Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis - Stellar War. The third album, Sweet Cruisin', came out on 8 April 2020.
Her later singles also found places in anime and film. "Seishun (Star Wink)", released on 6 January 2021, is the theme song of the film Natsume's Book of Friends: The Waking Rock and the Strange Visitor. "Voltage", released on 16 February 2022, became the nineteenth ending theme of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. Her fourth studio album, Quarter, followed on 12 October 2022. On 18 October 2023 she released her eleventh single, "Suki ni Shinayo", which was used as the second ending theme of Dr. Stone: New World.
