Biography
Arjun Sarja was born Srinivasa Sarja on 15 August 1962 in Madhugiri, India. He is an actor, director, producer and writer who works mainly in Tamil cinema and has also appeared in Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi films. He goes by Arjun in Tamil and Telugu and by Arjun Sarja in Kannada, and fans and the press often call him "Action King" because of his roles in action films.
Early life
Arjun is the son of the Kannada actor Shakti Prasad and Lakshmi, an art teacher. After watching Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon, he started karate training at 16 and holds a black belt. His father did not want him to go into films and turned down early offers that came to him as a teenager. The producer Rajendra Singh Babu eventually persuaded Arjun to begin shooting a film for his company, and his father accepted the choice afterwards.
Career
His first screen credit is Simhada Mari Sainya (1981), in which he appeared as a junior artist, and the director gave him the screen name Arjun, replacing the name Ashok Babu. He built a following in Kannada cinema and then received offers from Tamil and Telugu producers. His Tamil debut was Nandri (1984), and the Telugu film Maa Pallelo Gopaludu (1985), directed by Kodi Ramakrishna, was a success that ran for 367 days. In the mid-1980s he sometimes worked seven shifts a day. His Telugu successes of the period include Naga Devatha and Konaseema Kurradu, and in Tamil he had hits with Shankar Guru and Thaimel Aanai.
In 1992 he directed his first feature, Sevagan, which did well. A year later the director Shankar cast him in Gentleman (1993), in which he played a vigilante acting against corruption. Arjun had at first turned down the part without hearing the story. The film was commercially successful and won him the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor. He followed it with Jai Hind (1994), which he directed, and Karnaa (1995), in which he played two roles. In Kurudhipunal (1995), where Kamal Haasan offered him the part of a police officer, his performance was praised, and the film was India's official entry for the 68th Academy Awards in the foreign-language category.
He reunited with Shankar for the political drama Mudhalvan (1999), playing a television journalist offered the post of Chief Minister for a single day. He then tried gentler parts in Kannodu Kanbathellam (1999), Vaanavil (2000) and Rhythm (2000), a romantic drama by Vasanth in which he played a widowed photographer. He directed the love story Vedham (2001) and acted in Hanuman Junction and Sri Manjunatha the same year.
During the 2000s he concentrated on action films, often as a police officer, and directed and starred in Ezhumalai (2002) and Parasuram (2003). Giri (2004) and Marudhamalai (2007) were commercial hits. A devotee of Hanuman, he played that deity in the devotional film Sri Anjaneyam (2004) and took no fee for the role.
From 2011 he moved toward antagonist and supporting parts. He played a police officer in Venkat Prabhu's Mankatha (2011), starring Ajith Kumar, and won the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actor for the Kannada film Prasad (2012). In Mani Ratnam's Kadal (2013) he played a smuggler on the coast of Tamil Nadu, and the same year he played the police officer K. Vijay Kumar in Attahasa. He directed Jai Hind 2 (2014), which dealt with problems in the education system, and his 150th film as an actor was the thriller Nibunan in 2017. In 2018 he directed the bilingual Prema Baraha, with his daughter Aishwarya Arjun in the lead, and appeared in Naa Peru Surya and Irumbu Thirai. He portrayed Karna in Kurukshetra (2019), played the warrior Anandan in the Malayalam historical film Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea (2021), and appeared as an antagonist in Lokesh Kanagaraj's Leo (2023) and in Vidaamuyarchi.
Recognition
Arjun won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor for Gentleman in 1993 and the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actor for Prasad in 2012. He received the Vijay Award for Best Villain for Kadal in 2013 and the SIIMA Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role for Leo in 2024. His multilingual film Abhimanyu won the Karnataka State Film Award for Second Best Film in 2014. In November 2024 Dr. M.G.R. Medical University awarded him an honorary doctorate.
