Biography
Early life
Aura Garrido Sánchez was born on 29 May 1989 in Madrid. She began piano lessons at the age of four and soon added ballet, and she picked up English through a close childhood friend who spoke it at home. After finishing secondary school she enrolled at the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático in Madrid, concentrating on textual interpretation. She stopped in her third year, in 2010, because she had been cast in the film Plans for Tomorrow. Records also list the National University of Distance Education among her places of study.
Career
Plans for Tomorrow brought her first screen role and her first recognition: the Silver Biznaga for best supporting actress and a Goya nomination for best new actress. In the same year she took her first leading part on television in the Telecinco series La pecera de Eva. Over the next period she worked mostly on the small screen, appearing in the casts of Ángel o demonio, Crematorio and Imperium.
She returned to cinema in 2012 with small parts in two horror-comedy and thriller titles, Promoción fantasma, known in English as Ghost Graduation, and El cuerpo, released as The Body. In 2013 she played the lead in Stockholm, directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen. The role won her the Sant Jordi Award and a medal from the Círculo de Escritores Cinematográficos, along with nominations for best actress at the Goya, Feroz and Forqué awards.
In 2014 she joined the miniseries Hermanos and filmed Las aventuras del Capitán Alatriste, which was not broadcast until 2015. From 2015 to 2017 she played Amelia Folch in the Televisión Española series El Ministerio del Tiempo, a role that remains among her best known. Other credits of the period include the films Innocent Killers (2015), The Reconquest (2016) and Vulcania (2016), the series El padre de Caín (2016), and Cold Skin (2017) and Mist & The Maiden (2017).
She appeared in The Warning (2018), directed by Daniel Calparsoro, and in the series El día de mañana the same year. In 2019 she took part in Twin Murders: The Silence of the White City and The Goya Murders. Later credits include Valley of the Dead (2021), the series A Private Affair (2022), Alguien que cuide de mí (2023), in which she plays an actress at the height of her career facing a family secret that disturbs her relationship with her mother and grandmother, then Daniela Forever and the series Invisible in 2024, and La sospecha de Sofía in 2025. In all, 26 screen titles are on record between 2010 and 2025. Among her frequent colleagues in these credits are Michelle Jenner, Víctor Clavijo and Raúl Arévalo, each of whom shares two of her titles, and Javier Ruiz Caldera directed two of them.
She has also worked in the theatre. In March 2025 she made her debut in a stage adaptation by Rakel Camacho of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's play The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, at Nave 10 Matadero in Madrid.
Recognition
Garrido's honours come mainly from her early film work. The Silver Biznaga and a Goya nomination for best new actress followed Plans for Tomorrow. For Stockholm she received the Sant Jordi Award and a medal from the Círculo de Escritores Cinematográficos, and she was nominated for best actress by the Goya, Feroz and Forqué awards.
