Early life

Carlos Roberto Baute Jiménez was born on 8 March 1974 in Caracas, Venezuela. He is the youngest son of Alfonso Baute and Clara Jiménez. His father was born in Tenerife in Spain and his mother in Venezuela, and both came from families with Spanish roots. The surname Baute is of Guanche origin, the name of the indigenous people of the Canary Islands.

Career

Baute began performing as a teenager. In 1987, at the age of 13, he joined a group called Los Chamos, which released the album Con un poco de Amor in 1990. He also worked as a model. His first solo album, Orígenes I, came out in 1994, and in 1997 he took a role in the Venezuelan telenovela Destino de Mujer, playing Pedro José, a swimming instructor.

His album Yo nací para querer... (1999) marked a change of base. He moved to Spain, where he has lived since the late 1990s and holds citizenship, and his albums there found a wide audience. Alongside music he worked in Spanish television. He acted in the series ¡Ala... Dina! on TVE and Mis Adorables Vecinos on Antena 3, and he hosted the Gala Miss España, the Gala IB3 and the New Year's Eve gala on TVE1. His own music is mostly Latin pop, with some ballads and bachata, and he is signed to Warner Music.

Baute has released six albums, one of them a greatest hits collection. Peligroso appeared in 2004. On 1 April 2008 he released De Mi Puño y Letra, which included the song "Colgando en tus manos". The track was issued in two versions, one solo and one as a duet with Marta Sánchez, and the duet reached the top of the charts in a number of Spanish-speaking countries. Directo En Tus Manos followed in 2009, and in 2010 he put out the album Amarte Bien and the single "Que Cante la Vida". In October 2012 he recorded a duet with Laura Pausini, "Las cosas que no me espero". His audience is concentrated in Hispanic countries, and he has had less of an impact in other markets. His YouTube channel had about 1.1 million subscribers in May 2025.

Public roles

In March 2014, during a period of unrest in Venezuela, Baute released a video asking for respect among citizens on different sides of the political divide. A second video, "Que tu voz sea mi voz", shows him with the national flag painted on his face. During the later presidential crisis in Venezuela he stated his support for Juan Guaidó. He has said that he stopped visiting Venezuela for eight years after he was placed on a blacklist by the government of Nicolás Maduro.

Personal life

In June 2012 Baute married the Venezuelan model Astrid Klisans. He lives in Madrid with his wife and their three children.
