Biography

Early life

Caroline Garcia was born on 16 October 1993 and grew up in Bron, a suburb of Lyon, as the only child of Mylène and Louis-Paul Garcia. Her father coached her until 2021. As a junior she reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon in 2011, and the final of the US Open, where she lost to Grace Min. Her best junior ranking was fifth in the world, reached on 12 December 2011. She stands 177 cm tall.

Career

Garcia played her first main-draw match on the WTA Tour at the 2011 Australian Open, where she entered on a wild card and won her opening round. At that year's French Open she took a wild card as well, and in the second round she led Maria Sharapova by a set and a break before the former world number one came back to win. Her first WTA singles title came in 2014 in Bogotá, where she beat the defending champion Jelena Jankovic in straight sets. In the same season she was the only player to take a set from Serena Williams at the Miami tournament, and a quarter-final run in Wuhan lifted her to a career-high ranking of 36. In 2015 she reached two finals, in Mexico and Monterrey, losing both to Timea Bacsinszky.

The partnership with her compatriot Kristina Mladenovic brought her first major title in 2016. The pair won the doubles at the French Open, beating Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the final, and became the first all-French pair to take that title since 1971. They also won in Charleston, at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and in Madrid that year, were runners-up at the US Open, and were voted the WTA's doubles team of the year and the ITF's doubles world champions. In singles she won in Strasbourg and, on grass, at the inaugural Mallorca Open. She played at the 2016 Summer Olympics and helped France reach the Fed Cup final, which the Czech Republic won 3-2. For her part in that run she received the Fed Cup Heart Award.

In 2017 she won the Wuhan Open, her first title in the WTA's top singles tier, beating Ashleigh Barty in the final. She followed with the China Open, defeating Petra Kvitova in the semi-final and the newly crowned world number one Simona Halep in the final, which made her the first player to win both tournaments in one season. She reached her first major singles quarter-final at the French Open that year and qualified for the WTA Finals, where she lost in the semi-finals to Venus Williams. On 10 September 2018 she reached a career-high singles ranking of world number four. In 2019 she was part of the French team that won the Fed Cup, and she reunited with Mladenovic to take the deciding doubles match against Australia.

After a quiet 2021, when she dropped to 74th in the rankings and changed coaches, she returned strongly in 2022. She and Mladenovic won the French Open doubles title a second time, beating Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff in the final. In singles she won titles at Bad Homburg, Warsaw and Cincinnati. In Cincinnati she came through qualifying and became the first qualifier to reach a final at a WTA 1000 event since the category was created in 2009, where she beat Kvitova. She went on to the semi-finals of the US Open, her first at a major, losing to Ons Jabeur. She finished the season by winning the WTA Finals, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the final in straight sets, and returned to world number four. She led the tour in aces in 2022 with 394 and in 2023 with 462.

She appeared at the 2024 Paris Olympics. On 23 May 2025 she announced that she would retire after the French Open and a few more events. Her last tournament was the US Open, where she lost in the first round to Kamilla Rakhimova on a wild card. By the end of her career she had won eleven singles and eight doubles titles on the WTA Tour, and she was a former world number two in doubles. She is now a podcaster and YouTuber.

Recognition

Garcia's honours include the 2022 WTA Finals title, three WTA 1000 singles titles (the 2017 Wuhan Open, the 2017 China Open and the 2022 Cincinnati Open), and French Open doubles titles in 2016 and 2022. With the French team she won the 2019 Fed Cup.

Personal life

On 19 July 2025 she married Borja Duran, an entrepreneur from Barcelona. The two host a podcast about tennis called The Tennis Insider Club. In December 2025 she turned down a sponsorship offer for the show from an online betting company, citing ethical concerns.
