Biography

Cedi Osman is a Turkish professional basketball player who works as a small forward. He was born on 8 April 1995 in Ohrid and stands 204 centimetres tall. After starting out in Turkey, he spent most of his career in the NBA, mainly with the Cleveland Cavaliers, before returning to Europe in 2024.

Early life

Osman was born in Ohrid, in what is now North Macedonia. His father is Turkish and his mother is Bosniak, and he has an older brother, Caner, who also plays basketball. He began playing in 2001 and spent his school years in Sarajevo, where he trained with KK RIN Family Sarajevo and later with the youth sides of KK Bosna. Because of his father's Turkish background he obtained Turkish citizenship, and he has since played for the Turkish national team.

Career

In 2007 Osman signed a youth contract with Anadolu Efes after drawing attention at KK Bosna. He progressed through the club's junior and youth teams and spent the 2011-12 season on loan at Pertevniyal, which was then the club's affiliated side in the Turkish Basketball First League. In the summer of 2012 he signed a professional contract with the Anadolu Efes senior team.

On 25 June 2015 the Minnesota Timberwolves selected him with the 31st pick of the NBA draft, and his rights were traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers on the same night. He stayed in Europe for two more seasons and signed with Cleveland on 18 July 2017. In his first season there the Cavaliers reached the 2018 NBA Finals, where they were swept 4-0 by the Golden State Warriors. On 25 January 2019 he scored a career-high 29 points in a 100-94 loss to the Miami Heat, and four days later he was named to the World Team for the 2019 Rising Stars Challenge. He agreed a contract extension with Cleveland on 26 October 2019. On 22 March 2022 he made his 500th three-pointer for the club, becoming the ninth Cavaliers player to reach that mark.

On 6 July 2023 he was traded to the San Antonio Spurs as part of a deal involving the Miami Heat and the Cavaliers. A year later, on 7 September 2024, he signed a one-year contract with Panathinaikos, the reigning EuroLeague and Greek League champions. In April 2025 he agreed a two-year extension worth 3.3 million euros, and the deal was made official on 15 April. On 6 May 2025 he scored 28 points and added 8 rebounds in a 75-67 win over Anadolu Efes in the deciding fifth game of the EuroLeague quarterfinals, more than a third of his team's total. On 14 March 2026 he was named Most Valuable Player of Round 31 of the 2025-26 EuroLeague regular season, with 24 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Recognition

Osman's honours came largely through national team play. At the 2012 Albert Schweitzer Tournament he won a bronze medal and was named Most Talented Player. Turkey won gold at the 2013 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship and again at the 2014 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship, where he was chosen for the All-Tournament Team and voted the tournament's MVP. At EuroBasket 2025 he was selected to the All-Star Second team after leading the competition in three-point shooting with 29 successful attempts. His 2019 Rising Stars Challenge selection and his Round 31 EuroLeague award are noted above.

Public roles

Osman was a member of Turkey's junior national teams, appearing at the 2011 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship, the 2012 and 2013 Under-18 Championships and the 2014 Under-20 Championship. He then joined the senior side and took part in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, EuroBasket 2015, the 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Manila, EuroBasket 2017, the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, EuroBasket 2022 and EuroBasket 2025.

He captained Turkey at EuroBasket 2025 and averaged 16 points per game. Playing the full length of the final against Germany, he scored 23 points, but Turkey lost the game.

Osman became engaged to the Turkish actress Ebru Şahin in September 2021. The couple married in July 2022.
