Biography

Early life

Chuggaaconroy is the online name of Emiliano Rodolfo Rosales-Birou, an American YouTuber who was born on 8 April 1990 in Phoenix, Arizona. He is also known as Emile Rosales, and he has used the nickname Chuggaaconroy, often shortened to Chugga, since childhood. As a teenager he was active on Starmen.net, a fan community for the EarthBound video games, where he met the future content creator Stephen Georg. Georg later credited him with introducing him to the "Let's Play" format, in which a player records a game along with spoken commentary.

Career

Rosales-Birou posted his first Let's Play series on 26 March 2008. It covered EarthBound, a role-playing game for the Super Nintendo, and he used the commentary to talk about the game's music and artwork. He went on to record the other games in the Mother series. He has cited the Let's Player Claire Wheeler, known as Proton Jon, as an early inspiration.

His channel was suspended in July 2010 after false copyright claims and was reinstated the following month. In the same year he joined The Game Station, a network later renamed Polaris, as a partner. In early 2013 Nintendo made content-matching claims against several of his videos because they contained game footage, which briefly reduced his advertising income, but the company later stopped. In June 2021 Sony blocked several of his EarthBound videos worldwide, citing rights to the Mother soundtrack, and they were restored later.

Over time his videos spread through YouTube's recommendations, and he made the channel his full-time work. In 2014 The Atlantic named him as an example of a Let's Player earning a living from gaming videos. He has produced more than fifty solo series, mostly for Nintendo systems. They include Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Pikmin, Super Mario Galaxy, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Pokémon Emerald, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Xenoblade Chronicles and Splatoon. In 2018, on the tenth anniversary of the channel, he recorded a new version of his EarthBound series with extra background detail.

His style is that of a complete walkthrough. He tries to find every item, boss fight and side quest, and he explains the game as he goes so that viewers can follow along on their own. Humour and personal anecdotes about the games run through the videos. A writer for Wired described him as having an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the titles he plays.

With Proton Jon and Timothy Bishop, who goes by NintendoCapriSun, he is a founding member of The Runaway Guys. The group's channel is devoted to multiplayer games such as Mario Party and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The trio also host a live trivia show, Thrown Controllers, which has been staged at conventions including PAX, MAGFest and Momocon. From 2018 to 2024 they ran charity live streams for the aid organisation Direct Relief, under the name The Runaway Guys Colosseum, and in January 2025 it was announced that the series had ended.

His other appearances include a 2014 episode of Did You Know Gaming? about EarthBound, a 2012 episode of The Game Station Podcast with TotalBiscuit, and a turn as a couch commentator at Summer Games Done Quick in June 2022 for a speedrun of Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country.

Recognition

Critics and reporters have written about his videos in positive terms. The Irish Times described his content as a family-friendly option among gaming channels, and The New York Times used him as an example of a creator more interested in sharing enthusiasm than building a personal brand. His channel name was included as a cheat code in the 2019 game Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. His channel reached one million subscribers in 2015 and now has more than 1.25 million.
