Biography
Cristiano Malgioglio, whose full name is Giuseppe Cristiano Malgioglio, is an Italian singer, composer and television personality. He was born on 23 April 1945 in Ramacca, a town in the province of Catania in Sicily. His working life has run along two tracks: for many years he wrote songs that other performers made famous, and later he became a recognisable presence on Italian television while continuing to record under his own name.
Early life
Malgioglio was born in Ramacca, in the province of Catania. His first recording contract was with the label Durium, an opening that came about through the support of the singer-songwriter Fabrizio De André.
Career
In the 1970s Malgioglio made his name chiefly as a lyricist and composer. In 1974 he wrote "Ciao cara come stai?" for Iva Zanicchi, and the song won the Sanremo Music Festival that year. In 1975 he followed it with "L'importante è finire", recorded by Mina, which became the most significant success of his years as a songwriter. During the same period he began a working relationship with the Brazilian singer Roberto Carlos, for whom he supplied Italian lyrics.
Over the following decades his songs were recorded by a long list of well-known performers, among them Adriano Celentano, Rita Pavone, Amanda Lear, Raffaella Carrà, Mónica Naranjo, Dori Ghezzi, Milva, Patty Pravo, Ornella Vanoni, Giuni Russo, Marcella Bella, Sylvie Vartan, Umberto Balsamo, Fred Bongusto, Pupo, Rosanna Fratello, Loretta Goggi and Franco Califano.
Alongside this work he built a career as a performer. His own material is known for its ironic tone and frequent sexual innuendo, and his best-known song as a singer-songwriter is "Sbucciami". The earliest release in his listed discography is Scandalo (1977), and he has continued to release records since then. He also spent a period in Latin America. Some of his later titles reflect that connection, including the singles "Sucu Sucu" (2022), "Tutti me miran" and "Todo cambia" (both 2021), the album Sonhos (2017) and the single "O maior golpe do mundo (mi sono innamorato di tuo marito)" (2017).
His recent discography is extensive. The albums Playlist (2016), International Suite (2018), Danzando (2018) and Malo (2022) sit alongside a steady run of singles: "Danzando Danzando" (2018), "Dolceamaro" and "Notte perfetta" (both 2019), "Raffaella" and "Siamo tutte uguali" (2022), "Vita porno" (2023), "Fernando" and "Rosa tormento" (2024), "Alè alè" and "Chi lo sa" (2025), and "Amore di contrabbando" (2026). His records have been issued by Ri-Fi.
Television became a second career in the 2000s, after his return to prominence in Italy. He worked on Rai and Mediaset programmes as a commentator, a contestant and a host. In 2017 and again in 2020 he took part in Grande Fratello VIP, the Italian version of Celebrity Big Brother. He also served as a judge on Tale e quale show. In 2025 he was one of the co-hosts of the second evening of the Sanremo Music Festival, appearing with Bianca Balti, Nino Frassica and Carlo Conti.
His screen work outside television includes a role in the 2012 film Viva l'Italia, which is the title most often listed alongside his name as a film credit.
Public roles
Malgioglio's public profile extends beyond music. His social media following is large: his Instagram account had more than 1.1 million followers as of October 2026, and his YouTube channel had about 139,000 subscribers as of April 2025.
Personal life
Malgioglio is openly gay, and he has also said that he considers himself a Roman Catholic.
