Biography

Early life

Devon Edward Sawa is a Canadian actor, born on 7 September 1978 in Vancouver, the son of Joyce and Edward Sawa. His father worked as a mechanic, and he has two older siblings. He attended Alpha Secondary School.

Career

Sawa started working in 1992, at the age of 14, as a spokesman for a line of children's action toys. His first film part was a supporting role in Little Giants in 1994. The following year he drew wider notice as the title character in Casper, playing the ghost in his human form, and also appeared in Now and Then as Scott Wormer, the town bully. Casper later recorded a worldwide box-office total of about 288 million dollars.

Through the late 1990s he took leading and prominent roles in a run of films, among them Wild America in 1997, in which he played Mark Stouffer, SLC Punk! in 1998, and the horror comedy Idle Hands in 1999. In 2000 he played Alex Browning in the horror film Final Destination, a role connected with the franchise's later instalments, and he was the title character in the video for Eminem's song "Stan" the same year. He also voiced Flash Thompson in Spider-Man: The New Animated Series.

The early 2000s were less settled for his film work. He led Slackers and Extreme Ops, both released in 2002, and afterwards worked mostly on independent and direct-to-video productions, among them 388 Arletta Avenue, The Philly Kid and A Resurrection.

Television gave him a steadier base in 2010, when he joined the CW action drama Nikita as Owen Elliot. He was promoted to series regular in July 2012 for the third season, and the show ended in 2013 after four seasons. In 2011 he returned as Alex Browning in Final Destination 5. He starred in Punk's Dead, a sequel to SLC Punk! from the same director, James Merendino, in 2016, and played Nico Jackson in the series Somewhere Between in 2017, which ran for one season.

In 2019 he appeared as Lester Clark Jr. in Escape Plan: The Extractors and starred in the thriller The Fanatic, directed by Fred Durst, as the actor Hunter Dunbar. Leading roles continued with Hunter Hunter in 2020 and Black Friday in 2021, both of which drew favourable reviews. From 2021 to 2024 he played multiple roles in the horror series Chucky, and his later film credits include Gasoline Alley in 2022 and a starring part in the horror film Heart Eyes in 2025. In all, about three dozen screen credits are on record from 1994 to 2025. In a 2022 interview with The Independent he said he had sought out roles in which his characters smoked marijuana as a way to move away from the teen-idol image that began with Casper.

Recognition

Sawa won a Saturn Award in 2001. His co-stars across several titles include Christina Ricci, John Travolta and Jason Segel, each of whom appears in two of his listed titles.

Personal life

Sawa married the Canadian producer Dawni Sahanovitch in 2013. They have two children. He has described himself as irreligious and supportive of religious freedom.
