Early life

G Flip, whose full name is Georgia Claire Flipo, is an Australian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer from Melbourne. Born on 22 September, G Flip was raised in Victoria. Schooling began at a pre-school and a primary school in Cheltenham, and secondary education followed at Star of the Sea College in Brighton, from which G Flip graduated in 2011. After school, G Flip enrolled in a Bachelor of Music Performance course at Box Hill Institute.

Music started early. G Flip took up the drums at the age of nine, and percussion has stayed central to the way songs are written, even though the range of instruments has since widened considerably. Before any solo work, G Flip played in a number of Melbourne bands, mostly as a session drummer and now and then as a backing vocalist. Much of 2017 was spent at home writing and recording alone, and those sessions produced the material for the first solo releases.

Career

The stage name comes from a nickname that G Flip's father went by, "Mr Flip". In February 2018 G Flip uploaded the debut single "About You" to the Triple J Unearthed platform, and the track was played on Triple J the same day. It received its official release on 2 March 2018. Pitchfork picked it as a "Best New Track", and a video shot on a phone was added to a YouTube new-music playlist. The attention abroad led to an invitation to play a first solo show at SXSW in Austin, Texas, a month later. A second single, "Killing My Time", appeared in May 2018.

Recognition from the Australian industry arrived quickly. In November 2018 G Flip was nominated for the J Award for Unearthed Artist of the Year and became the first recipient of the ARIA Emerging Artist Scholarship. At the end of that year G Flip performed "Proud Mary" and "Blame It on the Boogie" at a New Year's Eve broadcast from the Sydney Opera House, and "About You" was used in an episode of the television series The Bold Type. In the 2018 Triple J Hottest 100, announced in January 2019, "About You" placed 38th and "Killing My Time" placed 62nd.

The debut studio album, About Us, came out on 30 August 2019. It included "I Am Not Afraid", written with the producer Ariel Rechtshaid. In the following year's Hottest 100, "Drink Too Much" finished sixth, ahead of "Lover", "Stupid" and "I Am Not Afraid". In 2021 G Flip played drums in the video for Troye Sivan's live version of "In a Dream", and a single, "Waste of Space", followed on 14 July 2022.

The second album, Drummer, was announced on 28 June 2023 and released on 11 August 2023. G Flip co-wrote and co-produced all eleven of its songs. The record reached the top of the ARIA Albums Chart in its first week, was nominated in four categories at the 2023 ARIA Music Awards, and won Australian Album of the Year at the J Awards. Seven of its tracks were voted into the 2023 Hottest 100, the highest number of entries by one artist in a single countdown.

A third studio album, Dream Ride, was released in September 2025, led by the singles "Disco Cowgirl", "Big Ol' Hammer" and "In Another Life". G Flip learned the saxophone for the tour that went with it. The album track "Bed on Fire" drew wide international notice after it was used in the Amazon Prime Video series Off Campus.

Away from recording, G Flip designed two footwear collaborations with Crocs, in 2020 and 2021, each with custom charms; both ranges sold out within minutes. In July 2024 G Flip launched a drinks brand, Box Alcoholic Juice, sold through BWS stores across Australia.

Recognition

Besides the J Award and the ARIA nominations for Drummer, G Flip won Breakthrough Independent Artist of the Year at the Australian Independent Record Labels Association awards in July 2019. Overall, G Flip has been nominated for nine ARIA Music Awards. A wax figure of G Flip was unveiled at Madame Tussauds Sydney on 13 August 2025.

Personal life

G Flip is known to friends and fans simply as "G". The musician has long followed the Collingwood Football Club and is an active supporter of Australian rules football and the women's AFL competition. G Flip has performed at two AFL Women's Grand Finals, in 2021 at Adelaide Oval and in 2023 at Ikon Park, and during the half-time show of the 2022 AFL Grand Final. In May 2023 G Flip married the American actress Chrishell Stause at a private ceremony.
