Early life

Isabel Pantoja was born on 2 August 1956 in the Triana district of Seville, Spain. She comes from a Romani family of musicians, and both her father and grandfather were singers. By her own early start she was performing at the age of seven, as part of the flamenco group of her cousin Chiquetete. At seventeen she met Juan Solano Pedrero, whom she regarded as her maestro, and who wrote her first hits together with the poet and writer Rafael de Leon.

Career

Pantoja's recording career began in the mid-1970s. Her first releases date from 1974, and in 1975 she put out the album Que dile y dile. A further record, Nina Isabela, followed in the later part of the decade. She worked mainly in copla, a Spanish song form that was fading in popularity when she took it up, and she is credited with bringing it back to a wide audience. Some of her early successes were "El Pajaro Verde", "Garlochi" and "El Senorito".

In 1983 she released Cambiar por ti, her first pop album, and from then on she moved between ballads, romantic songs and copla. After a long break in the mid-1980s she returned with Marinero de luces in 1985, a collection of songs written by Jose Luis Perales that sold a million copies in Spain. In 1988 came Desde Andalucia, produced by the Mexican singer and songwriter Juan Gabriel, with the single "Asi fue". A year later she released Se me enamora el alma, with modern programmed rhythms and songs again by Perales, which is described as her most commercial album. Further albums include De nadie in 1993.

Pantoja also made two films. In 1990 she starred in Yo soy esa, directed by Luis Sanz, and in 1991 she appeared in El dia que nacio yo, directed by Pedro Olea. Her records have been issued through Sony Music, and she has toured widely in Spain and Latin America. Her YouTube channel had around 51,000 subscribers when counted in May 2025.

Recognition

In 1989 Pantoja won the Lo Nuestro Award for Pop Album of the Year for Desde Andalucia. The award recognised the album she had recorded with Juan Gabriel the year before. It is the only award on record for her, and her wider recognition has rested on her long run of albums and on her role in reviving copla.

Personal life

Pantoja married the bullfighter Francisco Rivera Perez, known as Paquirri, on 30 April 1983. Their wedding drew wide coverage in the Spanish press, as both were already well known. Paquirri died on 26 September 1984, and the marriage ended with his death. Her second marriage was to Julian Munoz, from 2003 until it ended in 2006. She has one child on record.
