Juan Luis Guerra Dominican Singer Born in 1957

Early life

Juan Luis Guerra Seijas was born on 7 June 1957 in San Pedro de Macorís in the Dominican Republic. His parents were Gilberto Guerra Pacheco and Olga Seijas Herrero, and he has two brothers. As a schoolboy he was keen on sports. He later studied philosophy and literature at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, and then guitar and music theory at the National Conservatory of Music in the capital.

He went on to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he graduated in 1982 with a diploma in jazz composition. Back in the Dominican Republic he formed a band with local musicians.

Career

His first album, Soplando (1984), was recorded with the musicians who became known as Juan Luis Guerra y 440. The name refers to the standard concert tuning of A at 440 hertz. The record drew on the jazz ideas he had learned at Berklee and was not meant as a commercial release. After signing with Karen Records he shifted toward merengue and recorded Mudanza y Acarreo (1985) and Mientras Más Lo Pienso...Tú (1987). With Ojalá Que Llueva Café (1988) he took over as the group's lead vocalist, and the album began his international reputation, topping charts in several Latin American countries.

Bachata Rosa (1990) was his breakthrough. It sold more than five million copies, included songs such as "Burbujas de amor" and "Rosalía", and won his first Grammy. Areíto (1992) was more political; its single "El costo de la vida" criticised corruption and rising living costs in Latin America and became his first number one on the Hot Latin Tracks chart. Fogaraté (1994) turned to rural Dominican styles such as perico ripiao. Ni es lo mismo ni es igual (1998), whose singles included "Mi PC", "Palomita blanca" and "El Niágara en bicicleta", won Latin Grammys in 2000.

In 2004 he returned after six years with Para Ti, an album of mostly Christian songs that debuted at number one on the US Top Latin Albums chart. His 2007 album La llave de mi corazón brought him five Latin Grammy Awards in one night, in every category in which he was nominated. A son de Guerra (2010) mixed eight rhythms, and its first single, "Bachata en Fukuoka", reached number one on several Billboard Latin charts. A collaboration with Enrique Iglesias, "Cuando me enamoro", also charted in the same period. In 2014 he released the bachata single "Tus Besos", whose video was directed by his son Jean Gabriel.

He has also written songs for other performers, among them entries for the Dominican Republic at the OTI Festival in 1988 and 1989, and material recorded by Luis Miguel, Emmanuel and Gilberto Santa Rosa. In 2006 he opened for The Rolling Stones in San Juan. At the 2019 Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a concert of his drew more than 400,000 people, breaking a record set by Celia Cruz in 1987. In 2024 he released Captain Avispa, an animated film he produced with Amarilys Germán, directed by Jean Gabriel Guerra and Jonathan Melendez, inspired by his song "Las avispas".

Guerra has 29 listed awards to his name, including the Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Album for Bachata Rosa in 1992 and 22 Latin Grammy Awards between 2000 and 2024. He has also received the Order of Christopher Columbus. Berklee gave him an honorary doctorate in 2009.

In 2008 UNESCO named him an Artist for Peace for his work on behalf of children with disabilities and children in need. He later acted as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador at a 2008 event on the Millennium Development Goals, and in 2010 he organised a benefit concert after the Haiti earthquake, which led to the building of a children's hospital there. He is a member of the group Juan Luis Guerra 4.40.
