Biography
Early life
Kristin Laura Kreuk was born on 30 December 1982 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her parents, Deanna Che and Peter Kreuk, are both landscape architects. Her father has Dutch ancestry, and her mother, who was born in Indonesia, is of Chinese descent. She has a younger sister, Justine. As a teenager she trained in karate and gymnastics at national level, and she holds a purple belt in Shotokan karate. She had planned to study forensic science or psychology at Simon Fraser University when a casting director for the CBC series Edgemont approached her at her high school.
Career
Kreuk started out on Edgemont, a teen drama, filming its first season in 2000. After she signed with an agent, she won the title part in the television film Snow White: The Fairest of Them All, which ABC aired in 2002. Her agent then sent an audition tape to the creators of Smallville, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. She was called to Burbank to read for Lana Lang, the first love of the young Clark Kent, and was cast. The series premiered in October 2001, and for a time she worked on both Smallville and Edgemont. She left the show in early 2008 and came back for five episodes in the eighth season to finish her character's story. Edgemont ended in 2005.
Between 2003 and 2007 she served as a spokesmodel for Neutrogena, renewing the contract in 2005. She also took on other screen work: the comedy EuroTrip (2004), the miniseries Earthsea (2004), in which she played Tenar, and the independent film Partition (2007), in which she played Naseem. In 2009 she played the title character in Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, and the same year she appeared in a multi-episode arc of Chuck as Hannah, a computer troubleshooter at the Buy More store. In 2010 she played Tirzah, the sister of Judah Ben-Hur, in the television film Ben Hur.
Two pilots she worked on, the CBS comedy Hitched (2010) and the NBC drama 17th Precinct (2011), were not picked up. She later appeared in the Japanese horror film Vampire (2011), the adaptation Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy (2011) and the science fiction comedy Space Milkshake (2012). In 2012 she was announced as the female lead in The CW's reboot of Beauty & the Beast, playing Catherine Chandler. The show started in the autumn of 2012 and its last episode aired on 25 August 2016.
From 2018 to 2021 she led the CBC legal drama Burden of Truth as the lawyer Joanna Hanley, a series that ran for four seasons. In 2024 she took the lead in Murder in a Small Town, playing Cassandra Lee; the show was renewed for a second season in 2025. She has also worked behind the scenes. With Rosena Bhura, whom she met on the set of Partition, she formed the production company Parvati Creative, which focuses on films made through a female lens. Its first project was the short film Blink, with Kreuk as executive producer, and its second was the comedy web series Queenie.
In August 2017 she voiced Princess Shuyan in the graphic novel series Shuyan Saga. In March 2026 Titan Comics announced Black Star, a five-issue gothic fantasy miniseries she wrote with Peter Mooney and Eric Putzer, set in early nineteenth-century Winnipeg. Its first issue came out on 29 July 2026.
Recognition
Kreuk's work on Smallville remains the credit most frequently associated with her, and it carries by far the largest number of language editions of any title in her filmography. In 2015 she topped an online poll run by ET Canada that named Canada's most beautiful person.
Personal life
Kreuk lived in Toronto for several years while studying for an undergraduate degree and pursuing producing work, and she moved back to Vancouver in September 2022.
