Biography

Early life

David Broncano Aguilera was born in Rianxo, in the province of A Coruña in Galicia, to parents from Madrid. While still young he moved to Orcera, in the province of Jaén in Andalusia. His mother teaches mathematics, and his brother Daniel Broncano is a musician who founded the Music Festival of Segura, held in the Sierra de Segura in Jaén. Broncano studied computer science and advertising at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he also attended some physics classes. After leaving university he worked for several news agencies and advertising agencies.

Career

His comedy career began in 2008, when the channel Paramount Comedy accepted a monologue he had written for the programme Nuevos cómicos. He then worked as a stand-up comedian at Paramount Comedy and as a contributor to Cuatro's satirical programme Estas no son las noticias. In 2010 a sketch he performed on the programme UAU!, in which he played a fictional Paraguayan child ahead of a World Cup quarter-final between Paraguay and Spain, caused indignation in Paraguay, and the Spanish ambassador there publicly apologised.

Radio brought his wider success. From 2011 he contributed to Hoy por hoy on Cadena SER with a section called Broncano's Questions, a format whose approach later returned in his own television shows. From 2013 he appeared on the comedy programme El club de la comedia. He worked on radio shows including Yu: No te pierdas nada and Anda ya, and from 2014 he directed La vida moderna on Cadena SER with Ignatius Farray and Quequé. The programme earned the three of them the Ondas Award for best national radio programme in 2018.

That success took him to television. He became a regular collaborator on Late Motiv, the late-night show hosted by Andreu Buenafuente on #0, and drew positive attention from critics and viewers when he stood in for Buenafuente. This led to his own show, LocoMundo, and then to La Resistencia, which was broadcast right after LocoMundo. Broncano presented La Resistencia from 2018 to 2024 together with Ricardo Castella.

In April 2024 the public broadcaster TVE signed him to present La revuelta on La 1. The programme competed in the same slot as El Hormiguero, which had led that time slot for ten years, and its ratings passed those of its rival by the second day on the air. Ratings fell noticeably in the first half of 2025, but Broncano has said that TVE considered the figures enough to justify taking the risk of hiring him. With the collaborator Lalachus he also led TVE's New Year's Eve bell coverage for 2024 into 2025. In 2024 he is credited as director on La Revuelta.

Recognition

Broncano won an Ondas Award for the radio programme A vivir que son dos días in 2015, was named Comedian of the Year at the Festival de Televisión de Vitoria in 2017, and received the Jaén, Paraíso Interior award from the Provincial Council of Jaén the same year. He won Ondas Awards for La vida moderna in 2018 and for La Resistencia in 2019, and was nominated for Best Host at the Iris Awards in 2018 before winning that category in 2019. The Vitoria festival also gave an award to La Resistencia in 2019 and honoured his career with the Joan Ramón Mainat Award in 2023.

Personal life

Broncano has named Monty Python's Flying Circus and La hora chanante among his main comic influences. He played amateur football when young and takes part in sports such as tennis, skiing and mountaineering; the tennis player Roger Federer is his idol. Away from the stage he is a teetotaller and has often talked about this in interviews.
