Early life

Bülent Ceylan was born on 4 January 1976 in Mannheim, Germany. His mother, Hilde, was born in Hungary and is German; his father, Ahmet Ceylan, was a Turkish entrepreneur in the construction business. Ceylan has three older siblings. He attended the Friedrich-Ebert elementary school and the Ludwig-Frank-Gymnasium in Mannheim, and in his eleventh year he staged a parody of Boris Becker that went down well with teachers and classmates.

After passing the Abitur in 1995, he did internships at the music channel VIVA and the radio station RPR1. He began on small stages, enrolled to study philosophy and political science, and dropped out of university to concentrate on performing.

Career

Ceylan is a German comedian and cabaret performer who plays several different comic characters. His material draws on the habits of Germans with Turkish family backgrounds and on people from Mannheim, and he delivers much of it in the local Mannheim dialect.

His national breakthrough came in November 2002 with the programme Döner for one, a title that plays on Dinner for One. He followed it with Halb getürkt, which opened on stage in October 2005 and was shown on ZDF in July 2006, and with Kebabbel net, which opened in 2007 and which RTL recorded and broadcast in 2009. Ganz schön turbülent premiered in October 2009, Wilde Kreatürken in October 2011 (broadcast by RTL in 2012), Haardrock in January 2014 and Kronk in 2016. Most of these shows opened at the Capitol theatre in Mannheim, while Halb getürkt premiered at the city's Rosengarten. He develops his programmes mainly together with Roland Junghans.

On television, Ceylan has appeared in many German shows, including Quatsch Comedy Club. As an actor he played Mustafa in several episodes of the series Hausmeister Krause and Jonny, a main character in the sitcom Bewegte Männer. In June 2008 he took part in Stefan Raab's Autoball European championship, representing Turkey. RTL broadcast his stage show Bülent Ceylan – live on 26 September 2009, and his own series, Die Bülent Ceylan Show, began on the same channel in February 2011 with a first season of six episodes.

He has also played festival stages, appearing at the Summer Breeze metal festival in August 2010 and at Wacken Open Air in August 2011. His one listed film credit is Verpiss Dich, Schneewittchen (2018). His recordings include the audio CDs Produzier' mich net! (2000), Döner for one (2003), Halb getürkt (2006), Kebabbel net (2008) and Ganz schön Turbülent (2010), as well as DVDs of several of his stage shows.

Recognition

Ceylan won the Bielefelder Kabarettpreis in 2001 and the Kleinkunstpreis Baden-Württemberg in 2002. He received the German Comedy Award in the newcomer category and later the same prize as best comedian. In 2010 he was given the CIVIS Media Prize, which honours work on integration. Two of his DVDs, Bülent Ceylan – Live! and Ganz schön turbülent, earned gold records in 2011, and in 2012 he was awarded the Order of Merit of Baden-Württemberg.
