Biography

Early life

Kylie Minogue was born on 28 May 1968 in Melbourne, Australia, the eldest of three children. Her sister Dannii is also a singer and television host. The family moved between several Melbourne suburbs, and she attended Camberwell High School. As a child she took singing and dance lessons with her sister. Her first small television roles were in the soap operas The Sullivans (1979) and Skyways (1980), and in 1985 she was cast in the series The Henderson Kids.

Career

In 1986 Minogue joined the soap opera Neighbours as Charlene Mitchell. The wedding of her character, in 1987, drew an audience of about 20 million viewers. She became the youngest winner of the Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television, and the first person to win four Logie Awards in a single year. After performing "The Loco-Motion" at a benefit concert, she was signed to Mushroom Records, and her version was released in Australia in July 1987. She then worked in London with the production team Stock Aitken Waterman, who wrote "I Should Be So Lucky", a number-one single in the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia among other countries. Her debut album Kylie followed in 1988, and she left Neighbours that year to concentrate on music. Enjoy Yourself (1989) and Rhythm of Love (1990) continued the partnership. Her first film, The Delinquents, was released in December 1989.

After signing to Deconstruction Records in 1993 she took more control of her output, releasing Kylie Minogue (1994) and Impossible Princess (1997). In 1994 she played Cammy White in Street Fighter, and in 1995 she recorded "Where the Wild Roses Grow" with Nick Cave, a song that won two ARIA Awards. She joined Parlophone, and her album Light Years (2000) brought the number-one single "Spinning Around". In October 2000 she performed at the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games. Her album Fever (2001) included "Can't Get You Out of My Head", which reached number one in more than forty countries. She had a cameo as the Green Fairy in Moulin Rouge! (2001). In 2004 she won a Grammy Award for "Come into My World".

Later albums include Body Language (2003), X (2007), Aphrodite (2010), Kiss Me Once (2014) and Kylie Christmas (2015). In the 2000s and 2010s she also worked on screen: voicing Florence in The Magic Roundabout (2005), playing Astrid Peth in the Doctor Who Christmas special "Voyage of the Damned" (2007), starring in Leos Carax's Holy Motors (2012) and appearing in San Andreas (2015). She hosted a television special, The Kylie Show, in 2007. In 2017 she signed with BMG and released Golden in April 2018, followed by the compilation Step Back in Time: The Definitive Collection in 2019. That June she gave her first performance at the Glastonbury Festival. Disco (2020) topped the charts in Australia and the United Kingdom, making her the only woman to reach number one on the British albums chart in five consecutive decades.

In February 2022 she moved back to Melbourne after living in London since the 1990s, and in July of that year she returned to Neighbours as Charlene for the show's planned finale. The single "Padam Padam" (May 2023) was followed by the album Tension in September, and it won her a second Grammy Award, for Best Pop Dance Recording. In November 2023 she began a residency in Las Vegas. Tension II appeared on 18 October 2024, and in 2025 she toured with the Tension Tour. She has also been involved in business ventures, among them an underwear line launched in 2001, a range of home furnishings from 2008, a perfume and a wine brand started in 2020. The records list 67 albums and 84 singles from 1967 to 2025, with genres of pop and synth-pop, and releases on EMI.

Recognition

Minogue is an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, an honour she received in 2008, and an Officer of the Order of Australia, awarded in 2019. In 2008 she was also made a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. She won the Brit Award for International Female Solo Artist in 2002 and again in 2008, and in 1988 the Gold Logie for her work on Neighbours. She received the Centenary Medal in 2001. Other entries on her list of honours include an Amadeus Austrian Music Award and the title of Australian National Living Treasure. The records list eleven wins in all, and her notable works include Neighbours, "I Should Be So Lucky" and "Locomotion".

Public roles

In 2013 Minogue became a coach on the third series of The Voice UK, and later that year she joined The Voice Australia in the same role. In March 2024 she received the Global Icon Award at the Brit Awards, and was named in Time's list of the 100 most influential people that April. As of October 2026 her Instagram account had about 3.6 million followers.
