Biography
Early life
Idris Ennolandy Vicuña, who performs as Eyedress, was born on 28 May 1990 in Manila. He began playing guitar at a young age. His family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he first encountered punk music through people in his neighbourhood. When he was 13 the family relocated to California because his father, an animator, had started work with 20th Century Fox. While living in Orange County he played bass in a crust punk band called Liberal Underground. At 15 he returned to the Philippines with his family.
Before music became his career he briefly designed clothing. At around 20 he began making beats on his laptop and releasing them free of charge on the internet.
Career
After building a small following with his beats, Eyedress was introduced to the Filipino singer Skint Eastwood by a Manila promoter, and the two recorded the song "Biolumine". The track drew the attention of a French label and led to a record deal with Abeano Records, a subsidiary of XL Recordings. On 2 December 2013 he released his first extended play, Supernatural, which he recorded in his bedroom with the software FL Studio. A free mixtape, Hearing Colors, followed in April 2014, and a second EP, Egyptian Night Club, was posted to SoundCloud in July 2014. In September 2014 he released the single "Polo Tee" as a tribute to the producer DJ Rashad. After leaving XL he put out the mixtape Shapeshifter in 2015.
He signed to Lex Records in 2016, and his first studio album, Manila Ice, appeared in May 2017. Sensitive G followed in November 2018. He then moved from Manila to Los Angeles and began recording at his home in the Silver Lake district.
His breakthrough came with his third studio album, Let's Skip to the Wedding. Its early singles, "Jealous" and "Romantic Lover", spread widely on TikTok in late 2019 and early 2020. The album was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and came out on 7 August 2020. "Jealous" was certified gold in Australia, Canada, Poland and the United States in 2021 and platinum in the United States in March 2022, and "Romantic Lover" was certified gold in the United States in April 2022. In March 2023 the Recording Industry Association of America raised the certification of "Jealous" to double platinum and that of "Romantic Lover" to platinum.
His fourth album, Mulholland Drive, was released on 27 August 2021. Its first single, "Something About You", became popular in the United States soon afterwards, and Rolling Stone named it the fastest-rising song on American streaming services for the week ending 23 September 2021. In January 2022 he ranked number 35 on the Billboard Emerging Artists chart. The album received a nomination for a Libera Award for Marketing Genius.
With the Filipino American artist Zzzahara he formed a duo called The Simps, whose album Siblings was released by Lex Records on 14 February 2022. In April 2022 he played at the Coachella festival, where he previewed material from his fifth studio album, Full Time Lover. It was released on 26 August 2022 and contains 28 tracks that range across hip-hop, post-punk and shoegaze. Afterwards he released a cover of Blur's "Song 2" and appeared on "Different Life" by Nosaj Thing. He also remixed a track by Fly Anakin, Pink Siifu and Fousheé, and headlined a Lex Records event at Elsewhere in Brooklyn in October 2022.
In January 2023 Kevin Shields released a remix of "House of Cards" from Full Time Lover as part of Lex Records' remix series. "Flowers & Chocolate", released on 13 February 2023 with a video directed by Eddie Huang, was his first single for the major label RCA Records. He has worked with other artists, including Mac DeMarco.
His discography also includes Vampire in Beverly Hills (2024). In early 2025 he released Stoner, a 21-track album with guests such as Mac DeMarco and The Marías. That year he returned to Coachella, which was reported as the first return appearance at the festival by an act that began performing in the Philippines. He then toured North America on the Stoner U.S. Tour with N8NOFACE, from 8 July in San Francisco to 7 August in Los Angeles.
Recognition
The singles "Jealous", "Romantic Lover" and "Something About You" have all received gold or higher certifications in the United States. Mulholland Drive was nominated for a Libera Award in the marketing category.
