Biography
Early life
Luke Mitchell is an Australian actor, born on 17 April 1985 and raised on the Gold Coast in Queensland. As a boy he played tennis seriously from the age of five until he was nineteen, and for a time he planned to turn professional before deciding against it. He attended Nerang State High School and later trained as an actor at the Film and Television Studio International, where he worked with several teachers and coaches. Before landing screen parts he toured Australia with the entertainment company Sudden Impact Entertainment, performing in its live theatre shows.
Career
Mitchell's first screen work came in Australian television. While living in Melbourne he auditioned successfully for a guest role as Chris Knight on the soap Neighbours and appeared in eleven episodes. He then returned to the Gold Coast to play Will Benjamin in the teen series H2O: Just Add Water, which is the earliest credit on his record. In 2008 he filmed Performance Anxiety, a romance that was screened for its cast and crew at the Brisbane Queer Film Festival.
In June 2009 he moved to Sydney to begin playing Romeo Smith in Home and Away. He stayed with the series for four years, announced his departure in November 2012, and his character left the show on screen in 2013. The role earned him the Logie Award for Most Popular New Male Talent in 2010.
His move to American television began in 2013 with the CW's remake of The Tomorrow People, in which he played John Young. A planned series called Members Only, in which he was cast in 2014, was cancelled before its pilot aired. In 2015 he joined Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Lincoln Campbell, a character with superhuman abilities, and was promoted to the main cast for the third season. After the show he was cast in NBC's Blindspot as Roman, a part he first thought did not suit him; he sent in an audition tape after returning to the United States and asked to keep his beard, which the producers accepted.
In August 2018 he took over the lead role of Captain John "Abe" Abraham in the CBS drama The Code, replacing Dave Annable, who had played the character in the pilot. The series lasted a single season. In 2020 he appeared in the film Black Water: Abyss, and in 2021 he played Rowdy in Without Remorse, an adaptation of the Tom Clancy novel, alongside Michael B. Jordan. That same year he starred as Danny in the CW drama The Republic of Sarah, which the network ordered in May 2020 and cancelled after one season in September 2021.
In April 2022 he joined the fourth and final season of Legacies as Ken, the King of the Gods. He then became part of Big Sky in its third season as Cormac, the son of Reba McEntire's character, and in 2023 played Russ in the Hallmark Channel film A Pinch of Portugal opposite Heather Hemmens. He also made several guest appearances in the ninth season of Chicago Med as the emergency department doctor Mitch Ripley, with the part growing in the tenth season.
His listed credits cover five films and four television series between 2006 and 2021. Action, drama and fantasy are the genres that appear most often among them.
Recognition
The Logie Award for Most Popular New Male Talent in 2010, for his work on Home and Away, is the main award in his record.
