Biography
Early life
Marjorie de Sousa was born in Caracas on 23 April 1980. She began working in front of the camera as a child, appearing in television commercials and doing modelling work from about the age of twelve. In 1999 she entered the Miss Venezuela pageant as a contestant, supported by the designer Giovanni Scutaro. The pageant led directly into acting.
Career
Her first telenovela work came around 2000 on the Venezuelan channel Venevisión. In 2001 she co-starred in Guerra de mujeres as Carolina, a character that viewers remembered. In 2002 she left Venezuela to join Gata salvaje, a co-production of Venevisión and Univision, where she played the antagonist Camelia Valente. That part gave her an audience outside Venezuela. She then played Gisela, another antagonist, in the Univision serial Rebeca, and moved on to the Televisa production Mariana de la noche in Mexico as Carol.
Back in Venezuela she starred in Ser Bonita No Basta (2005) for RCTV, which is the earliest of the four television series in the filmography used here. A year later she led another RCTV production, Y los declaro marido y mujer, set on Margarita Island. In 2006 and 2008 she also appeared in the films Soltera y sin compromiso and Duelos de pasarelas, and in 2008 she joined the cast of the Venevisión telenovela Amor comprado as the villain Margot.
The next decade took her to Mexican and American networks. In 2010 she was the antagonist of Pecadora, where she also sang the theme tune of her character. In 2011 she appeared in Sacrificio de Mujer as Clemencia, a role that earned her a Miami Life Award for best female protagonist the following year. In 2012 she had a guest antagonist role in Corazón apasionado, made her stage debut in the play Toc Toc as Lili, and returned to Televisa for Amores verdaderos. In 2013 she joined the cast of the play Perfume de Gardenia and took part in the fourth season of the dance competition programme ¡Mira quién baila!, finishing third.
In 2014 she received her first lead role at Televisa in Hasta el fin del mundo. It is the title in her filmography with the widest reach, with entries in fourteen language editions of an online encyclopedia. Her male co-star changed during the project: Pedro Fernández was first attached, and David Zepeda took his place. In 2016 she appeared as a guest in Sueño de amor, and in 2017 she signed an exclusive contract with Telemundo. The network's telenovela Al otro lado del muro, in which she appears, premiered on 21 February 2018. In October 2020 she competed in the second season of the Spanish edition of the singing contest ¿Quién es la máscara?, dressed as a banana, and was voted out in the second episode.
Recognition
For her villain in Amores verdaderos she won the TVyNovelas Award for best antagonist in a telenovela. Her other honours include the Miami Life Award mentioned above, and she has received nominations for the Juventud Awards and the People en Español Awards.
