Synopsis

Forrest Gump is a 1994 comedy drama directed by Robert Zemeckis, with elements of the coming-of-age and historical genres. Tom Hanks plays the title character, a kind and plainspoken man from Alabama.

The story is framed by a simple scene. In the 1980s, Forrest sits on a bench at a bus stop in Savannah, Georgia, and tells his life story to whoever happens to be waiting beside him. His account begins in childhood, when he wears leg braces and is often teased because of his slow thinking. His mother, played by Sally Field, runs a boarding house and insists that he is no different from anyone else.

Early on he befriends a girl named Jenny Curran, played by Robin Wright as an adult, and she remains the person he cares about most as their lives move apart and back together. A surprising talent for running changes how people see him and sets him on a path through school, sport and military service, where he meets Bubba (Mykelti Williamson) and Lieutenant Dan Taylor (Gary Sinise). The film follows Forrest through several decades of American life, with his candid view of events shaping a warm, funny and sometimes sad portrait of the era.
