Synopsis
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a 2001 fantasy adventure film directed by Chris Columbus, made for a family audience.
Harry Potter, played by Daniel Radcliffe, is an orphaned boy living with his unwelcoming relatives, the Dursleys, who include Vernon Dursley, played by Richard Griffiths. His cramped, overlooked existence changes on his eleventh birthday, when a gentle giant named Rubeus Hagrid, played by Robbie Coltrane, arrives with startling news. Harry is a wizard, and he has a place waiting at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The film then follows his first year at the school. He leaves behind a world of rules and chores for moving staircases, talking portraits and lessons in spells and potions. On the train he befriends Ron Weasley, played by Rupert Grint, and at Hogwarts he grows close to the sharp, studious Hermione Granger, played by Emma Watson. Among the staff are Professor Flitwick, played by Warwick Davis, and the ghost Nearly Headless Nick, played by John Cleese. As the term goes on, the three friends become curious about a secret hidden somewhere inside the castle, and start to investigate it themselves.
