Biography
Bonnie Francesca Wright is an English actress, filmmaker and environmental campaigner. She was born on 17 February 1991 in London and is best known for playing Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter films, a part she held for ten years. Since finishing the series she has moved increasingly towards directing and producing.
Early life
Wright was born in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, the second child of Sheila Teague and Gary Wright, who own the jewellery company Wright & Teague. She went to Prior Weston Primary School and then to King Alfred School in north London.
In 2009, while the Deathly Hallows films were in production, she began a filmmaking degree at the London College of Communication, part of the University of the Arts London. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 2012.
Career
Casting for the first Harry Potter film took place across the United Kingdom in 1999. Her older brother thought she resembled Ginny Weasley, so she asked to audition. She had no professional experience apart from school plays, but she was given a screen test and soon afterwards the role.
She made her film debut at nine in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001), in a short scene at King's Cross station. She returned for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), where her character comes under the influence of a diary, and appeared in supporting roles in Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) and Goblet of Fire (2005). Her part grew in Order of the Phoenix (2007), in which Ginny joins Dumbledore's Army, and in Half-Blood Prince (2009), where she plays a chaser on the Gryffindor Quidditch team. She played the role for the last time in the two Deathly Hallows films (2010 and 2011) and was nominated for an Empire Award for her work in the final one. She is one of thirteen actors who appeared in all eight films. Outside the series she had roles in the television films Stranded (2002) and Agatha Christie: A Life in Pictures (2004), in which she played the young Christie.
After the final film she took roles in independent productions, among them Before I Sleep and The Sea (2013), the latter an adaptation of John Banville's novel in which she played the nanny Rose, and After the Dark. She made her stage debut in 2013 as the lead in Peter Ustinov's The Moment of Truth at the Southwark Playhouse in London. Her later screen credits include a voice role in My Dad Is Scrooge (2014) and Who Killed Nelson Nutmeg? (2015). In 2022 she appeared in the reunion special Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts.
She founded the production company BonBonLumiere in 2012. The same year she wrote and directed her first short film, Separate We Come, Separate We Go, a coming-of-age story starring her Harry Potter co-star David Thewlis, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. She later wrote and directed Know Thyself, with another franchise colleague, Christian Coulson. In 2016 her company released the first part of Sextant, a twelve-part project in which each short was filmed under a full moon. Phone Calls, a three-part series of conversations between pairs of people who never share the screen, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2017. In June 2018 she released Medusa's Ankles, based on a story from A. S. Byatt's The Matisse Stories and starring Kerry Fox and Jason Isaacs. She has also directed music videos for Sophie Lowe and for Pete Yorn with Scarlett Johansson. In April 2022 she published a book, Go Gently: Actionable Steps to Nurture Yourself and the Planet.
Public roles
Wright campaigns on environmental issues, with a focus on plastic pollution. In November 2017 she joined Greenpeace on its ship Arctic Sunrise to look at plastic waste in the oceans, and in January 2018 she travelled to Atlanta to deliver a petition to Coca-Cola calling on the company to stop making single-use plastic. As an ambassador for the Rainforest Alliance she visited forest communities in the Maya Biosphere Reserve in Guatemala in February 2020. She is also an ambassador for Lumos, the children's charity founded by J. K. Rowling, and in 2016 she travelled to Haiti with fellow ambassador Evanna Lynch to learn about children living in orphanages.
Personal life
Wright has lived in London and Los Angeles, and she moved to San Diego in 2022. On 20 March 2022 she confirmed on Instagram that she had married her long-term partner, Andrew Lococo. They have a son, born in September 2023.
