Alexander Ludwig Canadian Actor Known for Bad Boys for Life

Early life

Alexander Richard Ludwig was born on 7 May 1992 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He began acting as a child and balanced filming with ordinary schooling, attending Collingwood School. He later studied at the University of Southern California, including its School of Dramatic Arts, though he left before completing a degree. Early on he booked a toy commercial, which led to an agent and more commercial work.

Career

Ludwig's first listed screen credit is the television film A Little Thing Called Murder in 2006. In 2007 he appeared in The Sandlot: Heading Home, and he took the lead role of Will Stanton in The Seeker, a fantasy film based on a young-adult novel series. He has said he went through a long audition process before being cast. In 2009 he played Seth, one half of an alien sibling pair, in Race to Witch Mountain, which also starred Dwayne Johnson.

His best-known early role was Cato in The Hunger Games, released in 2012. In 2013 he took part in two films: Lone Survivor, in which he played the Navy SEAL Shane Patton, and the comedy Grown Ups 2. That year he also joined the History Channel series Vikings, playing Björn Ironside, and he remained in the cast through to 2020. He had lead roles in two unrelated horror films in 2015, Final Girl and The Final Girls, and appeared in the drama Blackway that year as Nate. In 2014 he was in the football drama When the Game Stands Tall.

The 2019 war film Midway had him in the cast, and in 2020 he played the hacker Dorn in Bad Boys for Life. He returned to that franchise for Bad Boys: Ride or Die in 2024, again under the direction of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Other screen work in the early 2020s includes Operation Christmas Drop (2020), Night Teeth, Heels, National Champions and Heart of Champions (all 2021), and Guy Ritchie's The Covenant (2023). In Heels, a Starz series about professional wrestling, he had a lead role. In television he also appears in Earth Abides (2024).

More recent titles include Marked Men: Rule + Shaw (2025), in which he plays Rome Archer, along with Unabomber and Killing Castro, both from 2026. In all, 26 screen credits are on record, with Unabomber the most recent. The Hunger Games is the credit documented in the most language editions of the encyclopedia, followed by Vikings and Bad Boys for Life.

Ludwig is also a singer and country musician. His first single, "Liv It Up (Teenage Wasteland)", arrived on 1 March 2012. In May 2021 he signed with BBR Music Group and BMG, and a self-titled EP followed on 21 May 2021. His debut album Highway 99 came out on 26 August 2022. He also featured in a music video for The Band Perry's "Gentle on My Mind", and in 2022 appeared in Nicki Minaj's video for "Super Freaky Girl".

Recognition

Of Ludwig's films with worldwide box-office figures on record, The Hunger Games is highest, at roughly 695 million US dollars. His appearances in the Bad Boys films, with Martin Lawrence and DJ Khaled in the casts, and the ensemble war pictures Lone Survivor and Midway form another main strand of his film work. He has recurring credits with Vanessa Hudgens in two titles.

Personal life

Away from acting, Ludwig has been a competitive freestyle skier and has taken part in skydiving. He has spoken in interviews about the difficulty of fitting school around film shoots when he was young and about wanting to attend university despite his early casting success.
