Early life

Ayesha Disa Curry, born Ayesha Alexander, was born on 23 March 1989 in Ontario, Canada. She spent her childhood in Markham until the age of 14, when her family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. Her mother has Afro-Jamaican and Chinese-Jamaican roots, while her father's background is a mix of African-American and Polish. Cooking interested her from an early age, shaped by the meals prepared in her home and community. She attended Weddington High School in North Carolina.

Career

After finishing school she moved to Los Angeles to work as an actress. Her early roles were small ones: the television film Dan's Detour of Life and the direct-to-DVD film Love for Sale in 2008, and the short Underground Street Flippers in 2009. In 2008 she also had a leading part, as Keeley Hawkins, in the eight-episode drama series Whittaker Bay. She later made guest appearances on Hannah Montana and Gary Unmarried in 2009 and on Good Luck Charlie in 2010.

Her public profile grew mostly through food. She started a food blog and a YouTube channel, then hosted the Food Network series Ayesha's Homemade, also titled Ayesha's Home Kitchen, from 2016. She has also appeared as a judge or presenter on Chopped Junior, Guy's Grocery Games, The Rachael Ray Show, Family Food Fight and About Last Night. Two cookbooks, The Seasoned Life (2016) and The Full Plate (2020), both reached The New York Times Best Seller List.

Her business activity began in 2014 with Little Lights of Mine, a company that sells extra virgin olive oil and gives ten percent of its proceeds to the hunger-relief group No Kid Hungry. In 2016 she worked with the chef Michael Mina on The Mina Test Kitchen of International Smoke, a pop-up in the Bay Area. It grew into a San Francisco restaurant that opened in November 2017 and closed in May 2026. In 2017 she became a brand ambassador for CoverGirl, the first food personality to represent the cosmetics company.

In 2019 she launched Sweet July, a lifestyle brand aimed at women and creators of colour. It includes a café in Santa Monica, a magazine, a production company, a books imprint and, since 2023, the skincare line Sweet July Skin, which draws on her Jamaican heritage and uses ingredients such as guava, papaya and soursop. Products from the skincare and home collections were named among Oprah's Favorite Things in 2023 and 2024. She is also a co-founder of Domaine Curry, a wine brand directed at Black and multicultural women. In 2024 she and her husband became investors and brand partners in PLEZi Nutrition, the children's nutrition company Michelle Obama co-founded in 2023, and later helped launch PLEZi Hydration.

She came back to acting in 2024 with the role of Heather in the Netflix romantic comedy Irish Wish. She then appeared in the Hulu film Joy to the World with Chad Michael Murray and Emmanuelle Chriqui, and in 2026 she voiced the character Carol in the Sony Pictures Animation feature GOAT.

Public roles

In July 2019 Curry and her husband established the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation in Oakland, California, a non-profit that works on children's access to nutrition, education and physical activity. The organisation has reported investing more than 90 million dollars in the Oakland Unified School District and nearby communities and delivering over 25 million meals. In April 2021 she gave virtual testimony to the United States House Committee on Rules on behalf of No Kid Hungry, speaking in favour of stronger federal nutrition programmes.

Recognition

Sweet July Skin products have received recognition from beauty publications and organisations, including the Oprah Daily Beauty O-wards, the SELF Healthy Beauty Awards, the Glossy Beauty and Wellness Awards, the NewBeauty Awards and the Essence Best in Black Beauty Awards.

Personal life

Curry married the basketball player Stephen Curry on 30 July 2011. They met as teenagers in a church youth group in Charlotte. She is a Pentecostal Christian and has spoken publicly about the role of faith in her life and work.
