Biography

Caitlin Hill is an Australian online video creator and actress, born on 8 September 1988 in Brisbane. She is best known under her channel name TheHill88 and was among the early YouTube creators to be admitted to the platform's partner programme. She later moved to New York City, took on media and acting projects, and returned to regular uploading in 2018.

Early life

Hill was born in Brisbane, where she lived when she began making videos. She produced, edited and uploaded her clips from her home there, and from 2008 she did so from New York City. She has also performed with Dance Masala, a Brisbane Bollywood performance team.

Career

Hill uploaded her first video to YouTube on 16 August 2006, as a fan response to the web serial lonelygirl15. The next day she posted a video reply to the YouTube comedian Richard Stern, titled "Re: LonelyGirl: Lazydork is Better Than You", which drew more than a million views before the end of September 2006. The Age described it as "cheesy rap". YouTube featured the video, and her first 14 short videos together passed four million views. She has named Zach Braff, Brooke Brodack and Bree, the lonelygirl15 character played by Jessica Rose, as influences on her decision to join the YouTube community.

After holding a sizeable audience for nearly a year, Hill became one of the first twenty to thirty users to join the YouTube partnership programme, in May 2007. That status allowed creators to share in advertising revenue. In September 2007 she wrote on her MySpace blog that she wanted to make videos only when she had a strong idea and that 2007 would be her last committed year in the programme. By October 2007 YouTube no longer listed her as a revenue-sharing partner. By November 2008 her videos had a combined view count of more than 17 million, and Australia's edition of 60 Minutes described her as "the goofy princess of cyberspace".

Alongside her own channel, Hill had a recurring role in Choose Your Own Tube, a web serial produced and directed by Remi Broadway. In July 2007 she appeared in the music video "Disgrace" by the band Coldstone, and in the same month she played herself in LisaNova Does YouTube, a comedy sketch by Lisa Donovan in which popular video bloggers are kidnapped and made to comment on user profiles. She took an unpaid but central part in the independent horror film The Girl in the Red Dress, which also featured Remi Broadway. In February 2007 she travelled to California for the "As One" YouTube gathering in San Francisco and appeared on Tom Green Live during the visit, alongside "Weird Al" Yankovic and Mike Vallely.

Hill also used her online following for advocacy, directing attention to the nonprofit website The Darfur Wall, which gained hundreds of visits over two weeks, and her fansite ranked second for advocacy points on that site. Travelling repeatedly between Australia and the United States, she auditioned for several large Hollywood films. She was cast as Lucy Grimm in a remake of Plan 9 from Outer Space, whose teaser trailer was released on 9 September 2009, but she withdrew from the project.

In 2008 she announced in several videos that she was moving to New York City. On 20 April 2009 she briefly became host of the video blog Rocketboom, replacing Joanne Colan; its producer later said that an agreement with Hitviews had not been reached, and Molly Templeton took over the role. In August 2018 she relaunched her channel with the series "Snacks and Facts with Caitlin Hill". As of May 2025 her YouTube channel had 49.8 thousand subscribers.

Recognition

On 8 December 2008 Hill became the youngest recipient of the National Arts Club Medal of Honor.

Public roles

Hill is Chief Creative Officer of Hitviews, a new media business she co-founded with Walter Sabo. The site lets marketers work directly with internet personalities such as Kevin Nalty and Cory Williams.
