Early life

César Domboy was born in France on 10 March 1990 and is the middle one of three children. He did not go to a formal drama school. Instead he took private lessons from the actress and drama coach Laurence Le Dantec, whose other students have included Gaspard Ulliel and Nils Hugon.

Career

Domboy's first professional role came in 2004, when he was fourteen, in the comedy La Confiance règne (released in English as Just Trust), directed by Étienne Chatiliez and starring Vincent Lindon. In the following year he appeared in the France 3 television film Allons petits enfants, a war drama about a boy trying to restore his family's honour after his father deserts. He then played Guy in the thriller Les Aiguilles rouges (Red Needles, 2006), about a group of boys lost on a hike, and Ferdinand in an episode of the France 2 miniseries Le Clan Pasquier. In 2008 he returned to cinema in 15 ans et demi, François Desagnat's adaptation of a novel by Vincent Ravalec, released in English as Daddy Cool.

His credits grew steadily over the next few years. In 2009 he starred in an episode of the Canal+ series Écrire pour un chanteur. He played a member of a band in Bus Palladium, and had a part in Bertrand Tavernier's La Princesse de Montpensier (2010), where he is credited as Charles of Lorraine, duke of Mayenne. In 2011 he played Piano in Sur le départ. He played Guy XVI de Laval in the second series of Borgia and also appeared in the films Les Lendemains and Baby Balloon (both 2013). In 2014 he co-starred in the drama Week-ends and took a part in the TF1 drama Résistance, which is loosely based on the activities of a resistance group in the Second World War.

In 2015 he starred in the short film Les Invisibles and co-starred in Robert Zemeckis's feature film The Walk, based on the story of Philippe Petit's high-wire walk between the towers of the World Trade Center. The Walk has a recorded worldwide box office of about 61.2 million dollars. He then featured in the romantic comedy Un homme à la hauteur and in Christian Duguay's Un sac de billes (A Bag of Marbles, 2017), the story of two Jewish boys in occupied France.

His best-known television role is Claudel Fergus Fraser in the Starz series Outlander, where he joined the cast in a recurring part opposite Lauren Lyle, who plays Marsali. In 2021 he appeared in two feature films, as Charles Grandet in Eugénie Grandet, an adaptation of Balzac's novel, and as Ernest in Le Bal des folles. In 2022 he joined the BBC series SAS: Rogue Heroes as Augustin Jordan, in a six-part drama based on Ben Macintyre's book. More recent credits include Bonnard, Pierre and Marthe (2023), in which he plays Charles, and Rich Flu (2024).
